Baby Girl Names?
My sister is having a baby girl in January. And she wanted me to help her with name suggestions. Help me, help her (LOL)? Names for girls that you like - perhaps even their origins/meanings ...

Thanks, in advance.

Chloe and Molly

Oh oh- I know a guy with a daughter named Isabelle, and everyone just calls her Izzy for short. Cutest little thing you've ever seen.

7. I like Molly too
But I knew someone named Molly and she was disapointed that her name didn't mean anything, but it was just a nick name for Emily that got itself out in front.

59. Isabel here
My wife and I chose it because it was her mom's middle name.
We didn't give her a middle name because we thought she could pick her own if she wanted one.
Others we've thought about after the fact only because you never hear them:

Mildred..........Myrna..............Meredith...............Maude
Eunice...........Hortense............Penelope............Agatha

2. How funny
I have been on the baby name kick because my husband and I are finally getting around to this much put-off project (having a baby!). I have been studying the girl names mostly because that's what I feel we will have first. I'm willing to share with you my top choices!

Carina
Jocelyn
Isabella
Kate
Lauren
Lana
Callie
Bridget

For boys all I have come with that have stuck are:
James
Austin
Dean
Justin

Nothing too exotic but those are my picks so far.

3. If we have a little girl,
we've decided on Eleanor for her first name, and Maria Theresa for her middle names. These are family names from both my side and my husband's. I like more traditional names rather than the trendy Sierras and Destinys. I also like Claire. I guess I like the more classic names because I was saddled with Ember. I have been called "Amber" my whole life and I hate it.

Kids get saddled with the damndest names because parents fall for fads. A while ago it was mis-spelled names.

a 3-8 year old son named Justin, Corey, Taylor, Dakota, or Morgan

17. I know what you mean.
I see about 300 kids a week, and half of them have the above stated names. Why would a parent want to name their child something that everyone else is using? When I was young, there were always multiple Jennifers, Jessicas, Heathers, and Ambers. Not to mention Justins, Jasons, and Dustins.

32. Last name?
I think it's important that the two "fit".
But they shouldn't rhyme.
I knew a girl named Carol McCarol.
We called her "Carol McCarol McCarol McCarol McCarol"...ad infinitum.
Aliteration sometimes works.
Our daughter is "Leigh" (Lee). The only thing she doesn't like is that when strangers see it written they sometimes call her Lee-ah.

39. my favorite female names
These are all names I've wanted to use for characters in my screenplays, but I think they make for great real names:

Nathalie
Daphne
Chloe
June
Reed

I've always thought, in the back of my mind, that if my future wife and I ever have a daughter, Nathalie Reed would be a great name for her.

I tend to like more classic types of names, some biblical. One of them is my daughter's, the others are just names I considered:

Grace
Erin
Audrey
Amelia

and I've also like my name 'Sarah' (although more unique when I was named, it has since become more trendy, but I still like it anyway)

53. Howza 'bout some BASQUE names?
I've been studying Basque (Euskara) lately, and there are some very unusual names for girls in Euskal Herria. (Some are actually quite pretty).

Here's a few, just for the "flava", up to the letter "F":

(Basque pronunciation: "J"=y "X"=sh, "Z"=ss, "S"=between s and sh)

Agurtzane, Agurne (Rosie)
Aiora
Aitziber
Aizpea
Alaine, Alazne (Miracle)
Ama, Amaia (Mother, Mom)
Andrezuria (Jennifer, Gwynneth; "White Woman")
Araoz
Areitio (like Arietty from Charlotte's Web?)
Ariturri
Arkija
Arrizabalaga
Atotz
Auriola (Halo)
Babesne (Protection)
Bakarne (Soledad)
Basagaitz
Basalgo
Beltzane (Charna)
Berberana (Barbara)
Bibie, Bibiñe (Vivian)
Bihotz (Heart; Corey)
Bittori (Victoria)
Bitxi (Gem; Vicky; pronounced “Bitchy”)
Bitxilore (Margaret, Daisy; "Gem-Flower")
Doniantsu
Dorleta
Dota (Dowry)
Edurne (Nieve; Snowy)
Ederne (Beauty; Bella)
Eguzkiñe, Eguzki (Sunny)
Elizamendi (Mountain Church)
Elorriaga (Thorn Place)
Elurreta (Snowy)
Erdoitza
Erkuden
Errukine (Piety)
Esozi
Estebeni (Stephanie)
Estibalitz
Etxauarren
Eulari (Eulalia)
Fruitutsu (Fruitful; pronounced Froo-ee-TOOT-soo)

The common name Laura may originally be from Basque, since Lora means Flower. And the name Maite (or Mayte) is increasing in popularity in the English-speaking world. It's Basque for Amy or Amanda, and is the Basque word for love.

A complete list can be found at Kate Monk's Onomastikon, an excellent source of all kinds of names, especially Celtic names.

For the etymology of Basque girls' names, go to the girls' names page of Buber's Basque Pages, an excellent resource for all things Euskara.

Have fun!

55. We'll probably go more traditional
Elizabeth (It is also my husband's grandmother's name). Maybe, Margret. I think it is important that women have formal stronger sounding names to be taken seriously although perhaps that won't be as important in the future. Along the same lines Helen, Katherine, and Anna. I think that my great grandmother's name, Angelia, is rather pretty though.

And there are 5 of us on this floor of my dorm, plus two more else where, and at least three in other dorms around campus. Thankfuly lots of nick names, Liz, Lizzy, Beth, one goes my her middle name, Gina, and I once met a girl that went by Zab. Elizabeth was the mother of John the Baptist and was a Queen Regent of England.

My mother knew a little boy, he was three at the time and his parents, hippies, named him Entropy! Can you imagine the terror of reading that name on a kindergarten attendence list?
