Marriage Rights debate...
Edited on Tue Mar-01-05 06:54 PM by Sympleesmshn
My high school decided to have gay marriage as the topic of our debate tomorrow. My school is ultra republican, so I was wondering if anyone had any ideas of how to shift the balance in our favor. The Dems are out numbered about 3 to 1 so any ideas you have, on the topic or debating against overwhelming odds, I would appreciate it.

1. First of all, it's not Gay Marriage. It's Marriage Rights.

3. Less government interference
Those who claim to represent the party of smaller government and rule of law should align themselves with a position recognizing marriage between two members of the same sex because no municipal, local, state, or federal government has any business regulating the private household affairs of two adults, should they deem it necessary to regularize their relationship. If two men enter into a contract that delineates a martial relationship, it is the position of those against gov't recognition of that contract to delineate the harm done: to whom the injury occurs, and why any branch of government should be empowered to deny that contract. I would also bring up the fact that very many rabbis and ministers officiate at same-sex weddings; are your opponents so keen to limit their freedom of religious expression?

Enough $2 words for you? ;-)

4. equal rights, equal rights, equal rights.
Pound equal rights between two consenting adults.

Mention all the benefits and entitlements afforded to married couples and point out how homosexual individuals are being denied those rights.

As a defense to the "Marraige has always been between a man and a women:"

The institution of marriage is constantly evolving and is different between times and societies. It used to be a legal arrangement entered into by the parents of the couple without the consent of teh couple, women used to have no rights and were viewed as the property of the husband, etc.

11. Exactly--
Make the points to show this is what the whole gay issue debate should be about--Equal rights--and not because of religion or because of "marriage"

Point out that not allowing gays to have marriage, civil union rights that they are being discriminated against.

I lived in Falls Church and Centreville for awhile.

I just watched "War Games" recently, by the way. :)

10. The debate went okay...
the republicans could only play the religion card... One of them ranted on and on about how marriage was a through the Church and how gays should have the same rights as normal married couples because he was better than them... we kept trying to get it to marriage rights but they kept going into religon... Not a fun debate...
