Good Lord, '80s music could sometimes be just god-awful!
I was in my local cafe which is my designated study hangout last night when they were playing old '80s hits. I grew up listening to these songs on the radio when I was in high school, but I hadn't heard a lot of these songs in many, many years... and with good reason. A lot of them were utterly cheesy.

BTW, I'm not talking about the hair-farmer "new wave"/"new romantic" bands or the glam-metal bands. Duran Duran, Dead Or Alive, A Flock of Seagulls are all dated, but they all have a retro appeal for me (and ditto for Poison and Ratt).

The worst of that lot by far was the stuff that was considered comparatively more mainstream rock. Anyone remember Mr. Mister? John Parr? Cutting Crew? Robbie Nevil? No, you haven't? Well, with good reason -- that shit deserves the oblivion that it's sunk into. I heard 'em all last night. Think of lukewarm adult-oriented pop rock set to '80s synthesizers with the simulated-strings sound. Yeech. :puke:

2. Plenty of people remember Mr. Mister!
They were way better than people give them credit for. Don't forget, their drummer is now a member of King Crimson.

3. C'est La Vie, C'EST LA VIE!!!
How could you bash poor Robbie Nevil?

But Yes, John Parr (and his mullet-helmet) were awful.

6. I liked good 80's music
but agree that probably 95% of it sucked. That percentage seems to stay fairly consistent every decade. Well, it's probably closer to 98% now thanks to American Idol, Brittany Spears and the boy band phenomenon.

8. Robbie Nevil? Oh I totally forgot about him! Hahahahahaha
What a waste of airspace. Sheesh. Didn't ya just love that sloppy asymmetrical haircut that looked like one of the worst cases of bed-head? I knew someone who modeled his whole look after that loser. Worse, he was a graphic artist who modeled all of his art after Patrick Nagel. Didn't have an original thought in his head.

19. Hey, there was a LOT of genuinely great music in the '80s too
It's just that the vast majority of it was relegated to college radio and the underground club and zine scenes. I still love '80s punk, hardcore, thrash, indie and alternative music.

Ever heard Husker Du? Or Replacements? They were '80s bands. So were Jesus and Mary Chain, Dream Syndicate, Spacemen 3, Bad Brains, Black Flag, Sonic Youth, Mudhoney, Circle Jerks, Subhumans, GBH, Poison Idea, Squirrel Bait... the list goes on.

10. I was in high school then...
... and I thought it sucked. I refer to the 1980s as the Who years, because I old listened to old stuff.

11. I can't even stand to listen to Duran Duran anymore
We have one of those "retro" stations here...yuck! Besides, most of the good 80's music never made it to radio in the first place, so now we get to hear the same old corporate schlock again. Yippee.

17. Hey, I've seen Rick Springfield a few times in recent years...
...and he puts on a hell of a show. I've always thought his lyrics were a little bizarre ("moot"?!?), but the tunes were good.

...Didn't you know all the 80's music fans would come out of the woodwork to defend their - cough - music....

I thought we put this music to bed back in the 80's, along with Ray-gun.

18. For the entire decade, I never listened to commercial radio,
only college stations.

Sounds like that was a damn good idea, because I don't recognize any of the band names. I escaped the plague.

20. Night Ranger, Ratt, Def Leppard...
... Quiet Riot, Steve Perry, Twisted Sister, Joan Jett, J. Geils, Whitesnake, Pat Benetar, Van Headache, Thomas Dolby, Wham?

Let's not forget Air Supply, Lionel Richie and Whitney Houston.

Hockey hair, canvass pants, acid wash, big hair, Betamax, the end of drive-in theaters and LPs, Lee Iaccoca, exploding space shuttles, cheezy cars, rubix cube, smoking in stores, Atari, AIDS, flourescent clothes.

:hurts:  :spank:  :evilfrown: :puke:

Maybe, if I lead a pure life, I'll never have to hear an Air Supply song again.

22. If you're going to bash 80s music because of Mr. Mister...
Edited on Wed Mar-02-05 04:09 PM by dean_dem
...then it's only fair to hold the not-much-better 90s responsible for 4 Non Blondes, Vanilla Ice,and Limp Bizkit. Or the 70s for The Carpenters and Debbie Reynolds. Hell, look at what passes for mainstream music now. I'd take Cutting Crew over Good Charlotte any day of the week.

25. Last night I had the strangest dream.....
I sailed away to China
In a little rowboat to find ya
And you said you had to get your laundry clean
Didn't want no one to hold you
Now what did that mean?

Ain't nothing gonna break-a my stride
Ain't nobody gonna hold me down oh no
I go to keep on movin.....

:spank:
