Why are some people so easily SHOCKED?
Edited on Thu Mar-03-05 07:25 PM by Sugar Smack
I don't get it. It's cold outside, and I seem to be the only one succepitble to static electricity. Do I have a medical problem? Everyone else around me just walks around, blithely TOUCHING anything they want to, cheerfully combing their hair with no embarrassing repercussions. WHY ME? I run a comb through my (long)hair and it stands on end. It makes people laugh, but I get no joy out of it.

Then there's going to open the door. Why do I have to safeguard my hands against the inevitable with my sleeve JUST TO AVOID GETTING ZAPPED? My boss says "The rest of us are grounded." I love him, he's a funny guy, but Damn! I wear rubber soles. My cat's in on this, too. She likes to electrocute me with her nose, every chance she gets. Is there anyone else out there who can fix this/relate to my constantly getting shocked?? Thanks in advance!

1. Try magnet bracelet...
You may also shuffle your feet a lot.

Or you could harness the energy and become a super hero.

Your choice, but if you look like crap in leotards I would try the first suggestion.

22. according to Click and Clack the tires on your car can cause
static buildup that attacks you when you touch your car door. One car I had was so bad about static that I made a habit of touching the glass when I got out of the car, before I touched anything else.

Touch the wood part of the door before you touch the handle, too.

25. Click and Clack are the founts of wisdom
and I'd listen to ANYTHING they had to say on the subject of "getting shocked constanatly".. Incidentally, one caller asked what kind of glue to use in order to stick rhinestones on her car. They suggested that she use sequins so as not to be so "Gaudy". I dearly love them.

12. No! I'm not one of those "Shufflers"!!!
I pick the dogs up, oh so carefully and in rubber-soled cheap tennis shoes. Is that it? If I changed my shoes from cheap to expensive, would my hair not fly up at the slightest provocation? Answer, please. Dignity depends on it.

15. I gather up a bit of electricity myself
We just have electric personalities I guess. I don't have the hair issue though, which I think is climate related.

16. I hate to sound so ingenuous, but is there REALLY an anti-static bracelet?
As an unpopular person at work, I may have to try that!!!! It's more that I get picked on, is the thing. I would just like a modicum of dignity.

8. It happened to me too
Here's how I solved it:

I sit on a fabric chair at work, and that is where it builds up. So I bought a can of Static Guard, and I spray the chair periodically. Now, I am rarely ever bothered by it. Before, I was the only one in my department who could make a popping sound by just touching objects.

Also, the drier the climate, the worse the static electricity gets, because moisture keep excess ions from building up.

Edited on Thu Mar-03-05 07:35 PM by two gun sid
SOME CURES
The simplest cure: before touching a doorknob, a car door, etc., first touch it with a metal car key. The fiercely hot spark will blast the tip of the metal key rather than blasting your sensitive fingertip, and it will painlessly discharge your body's charge. (Grip your keys firmly so no spark appears between the keys and your skin.) Once you've been discharged, you can safely grab the doorknob. However, if you walk around some more, or if you sit upon a plastic car seat, you'll again need to use the keys discharge yourself.

To prevent sparks entirely, we must somehow stop the charge separation process. This can be done by:

* Changing your shoe soles to another type (try leather)
* Raising the humidity in the room
* Spraying carpets, floors, and chairs with an antistatic coating
* Installing a balanced-polarity ionizer fan (try the $50 static eliminator # MI9957, from C&H Sales)
* Wearing metal-coated shoe soles (try alum. foil, but it's slippery)
* Wearing a grounded wire connected to a wrist strap

14. Wear natural fiber clothing as much as possible
When at the playground don't go down a plastic slide- ow! to your butt when your feet hit the ground!
Be sure to get rid of the sparks before pumping gas.

28. I've been experiencing that lately myself.
I thought it was because I was starting a new job in a new environment, but what does Deli meat have to do with static electricity?

I can pet my cat and it's like a lightning stom in her fur.

thanks,
Kire
