After 34 days worth of "not tonight" I started at the gym today
Edited on Fri Mar-04-05 01:00 AM by HEyHEY
It's been four years since I actually worked out. I took er easy, but I forgot how good it feels afterwords.

I promised myself I wouldn't miss more than two days in a row.

If you're delaying it do it!

1. I did one day at the center about a month ago,
guess I over did it, my shins hurt like hell. So I stopped. Yes, I did four years and more at the fitness years ago, did the same as you, stopped!

2. Man I was just away for two weeks
because I was sick and a little back injury, and it took a lot to get me to go back again. Bah!

Anyway, great work getting back into it. It always does feel so good! Keep it up!!

9. I Can't Go To The Gym
I'm intimidated by all the mirrors and all the buff people, when I am such a fat slob.

I REALLY wish they'd open a gym just for people like us...you know, "Fat Slobs Gym" or "Physically Pffft."

And no buff people or mirrors allowed at that gym. When you graduate, and get in shape, then they send you off to Gold's Gym, or wherever. but I'd like a gym where I wouldn't have to feel intimidated, because there's nothing but buff people at the gym, and I'm a fat slob.

The people who most NEED the gym are the ones you never see at the gym...and I suspect many of them don't go for the same reason I don't go...they are intimidated.

If only I could hook up with a venture capitalist....

11. Here in SoCal,
there are gyms for women. I think "Curves" is one. Do you have those in Texas? Worth a look!

There is a Curves here. not that it matters, I'm leaving the state in two weeks, heading to Pennsylvania. but thanks.

P.S. I hear Curves is a place to avoid, because they are supposedly a big contributor to the R's, but I could be mistaken. I know I heard something bad about them recently.

ON EDIT: I knew it!! I was right!! See here...

19. Oh, ICK!
Never mind then; there's bound to be someplace just made for you, so you can get fit. I no longer care what other people think, being old and wise (HA). Thanks for alerting me to avoid Curves. I'll tell any liberal I know who's thinking of it to avoid them like the PLAGUE! Hope you have fun in Pennsylvania!

15. Who cares what other people think?!
Edited on Fri Mar-04-05 02:31 AM by CanuckAmok
They're there for the same reason you are; to be fit.

It's a tough first step, but once you go once, and see that everyone else is just there to work on themselves and aren't preoccupied with judging you, you'll be far more at-ease.

And remember, you don't know those people...for all you know, the buff guy next to you was 100lbs overweight two years ago.

There are all kinds of womens-only gyms, and co-ed gyms with women-only areas... look into it.

Or, if you're truly too insecure to go, start out by doing workouts at home. walk or cycle every day, or invest in a simple treadmill or climber you can use while you watch TV. You'll be amazed at how fast you lose weight with juat twenty minutes a day of mild cardio.

God, I sound like an info-mercial, but it's true. I shed 50lbs in a year just by cutting my empty calories a bit, and doing a half hour of stairmaster four times a week.

And I have NO willpower...If I can do it, anyone can!

on edit: CanuckAmok's tasty at-home workout shake:

1 cup orange juice (not from concentrate)
1 cup chocolate soy milk
1 banana
1 cup low fat (1% or less fat) yogurt w or w/out fruit
1 tablespoon of NATURAL peanut butter
1 tablespoon skim milk powder

Blend on high...and enjoy!

Tastes great, gives you energy, and is quite filling...no ndesire to snack after one of those! In fact, I'm having one right now!!

28. I was intimidated too, until I realized
that all the pretty, skinny Spandex-clad gym bunnies and the big buff muscle boys were too busy admiring themselves in the mirrors to even know that I was there. Try not to compare yourself to them - it's not a competition, and most of us are there for the same reason: to get in better shape and be healthier. I will never be able to wear Spandex with a straight face, but I do enjoy going to my local gym in my baggy T-shirts and gym shorts and having a good, stress-busting workout.

Most gyms will allow you to have a trial membership - maybe you can check out a couple of local places and see where you feel most comfortable. The place I go now is smaller than most, but it is very friendly and the staff is helpful.

10. Working out is SUCH a good idea!
I try to go at LEAST once a week, twice is normal; but three times almost never. I always feel so good, so smart afterwards. I have lots of motivation these days: I'm 61, and I'd like to have about 30 more years. I need to lose some more weight, too. I look at all the 30 somethings who work out next to me, and I think, I wish I'd done it back then. But I didn't, and you can't go back anyway...So I try to make the most of today...

Keep up the terrific work! You won't regret it...(BTW, if you're sore the next day, then you overdid it.)

13. this week I've been lazy too
either didn't had the time or wasn't in the mood to go. Yesterday evening I was napping on my couch when my bf called and the first thing he said was "Why aren't you at the gym?". It was funny. He kicked my ass through the phone. I told him earlier this week to do that, because I know me. So I went.
You are right, it feels good afterward.

16. Good for you, Mr. HEY.
I try to go three times a week, but I haven't been in a month (my membership ran our and I'm too broke to renew it right now).

But I just got back on my treadmill on Tuesday, after a threer week absence. Ow!

Not to worry you, but your metabolism slows down so much between 25 and 30, if you're not careful, the pounds just pack themselves on.

17. I don't really go a real gym.
Edited on Fri Mar-04-05 03:11 AM by Zing Zing Zingbah
I go running outside and I sometimes use my apartment complexes gym equipment.

I started working out about May of last year. Since then I have really tried hard to exercise just about everyday (usually 6 days out of the week). Typically, my exercise consists of running about 3 miles a day. Some days I'll do sit-ups and push ups or go and use the gym equipment too. I weighed 153 lbs on May 1st last year when I have my last pap test done. Now I weight fluctuates any where from 110 to 115 lbs. It seems weird to me that I lost that much weight, but I like it. It's sweet because I can actually see ab muscles when I flex and my legs, thighs, and butt all look better than they ever have.

I had my wisdom teeth pulled last Thursday. I didn't exercise at all for four days because I had those teeth pulled, and that's longest period I've gone with out exercising in months. I haven't done anything with weights or any push ups in about a week. I'm still kind of waiting for my mouth to feel more like normal again, but it's getting there. I did do about 50 push ups one day, but I stopped after that because the exercise was causing pressure to build up in my face. I might wait another week still before I try weight exercises again, but I got back to running on Monday. It's good to go back to the routine.

21. Take it easy at first.
You can do cardio and light ab work every day, but you don't want to do any heavy weight training more than three times a week with at least one day of rest in between.

Is your goal to lose weight, build muscle, increase endurance, or all of the above?

Wow! I am impressed...keep it up.

I have joined a fitness club a couple of times and while I am gung ho at the beginning, I eventually lose interest.

I've been riding my bike more.
