Miller Brews Up Fruity 'Beer'

POSTED: 9:08 am CST March 4, 2005

MILWAUKEE -- It's fruit with a kick.

Miller Brewing says it will test market a new fruit-flavored malt beverage from South Africa, even though the brewer has dropped other flavored malt drinks because of disappointing interest.

The Milwaukee brewing company will test a product called Brutal Fruit in Seattle, Tampa and Richmond, Va., beginning March 14.

Miller says the product is fruit juice with 5 percent alcohol, much like beer. It will come in four flavors -- strawberry, mango, kiwi and raisin-like litchi.

1. Have you ever tried Leinie's Berry Weiss?
That stuff is sweet. I can barely finish a bottle - and now that Miller owns Leinie's, I wonder if that's what they have in mind.

2. Uh, yuck.
Besides, lychee (where'd they get the "litchi" spelling?) doesn't taste anything like raisins.

But since these people have obviously had their heads up their asses, it's reasonable to assume their taste buds aren't working to well.

3. Fruited beers have existed for centuries.
Some of them are quite good.

I'll reserve judgment on what Miller intends to put out until it's out, but I'll bet it's probably crap.

4. Coming from Miller, I'm Expecting it to be Too Sweet and Artificial
tasting, something like Zima.

Fruit flavored beers are not always bad. One of my favorite treats a rich brown Belgian raspberry lambic.

7. You're right, they're not talking about
beer with some fruit flavor in it; they're talking about some kind of fruit-juice analog with crappy, cheap malt liquor to provide the alcohol.

5. I prefer Radler (sp?) which is a Bavarian beer drink.
You mix Paulaner Weiss beer with lemonade. The good citizens of Munchen drink this in the summer. I've consumed this in one of Munchen's fine Irish pubs (the most Irish in Europe seem to be in Munchen!) Yummm! Try it sometime.

12. Sounds like the English Shandy
...which is 1/2 pint of ale or lager and 1/2 pint of English Lemonade. English Lemonade, however, is nothing like its American counterpart-- it's more like a sweeter version of Sprite or 7-Up.

Shandies are great in the summertime. :)

6. BLEEEAH!
Damn, if yer gonna invest the R&D bucks, invest them in making a better beer!

Course, all these fruity malt beverages are aimed at the too young to drink market...just like Boone's Farm was back in my day.

...go with Lambic Ales. They are quite good. And watch out for Miller and artificial ingredients.

If I want a 'fruity' beverage, I'll drink hard cider...or wine. I assume this product is targeted toward younger consumers - as with Zima or Boone's Farm. It's likely full of chemicals I have no desire to ingest anyway.

10. I generally don't like fruity beer.
Pete's Strawberry Blonde is the exception. Good stuff.

11. Sounds a lot like ZIMA
:puke:

Don't forget that this is the same company that introduced us to "Miller Clear" about a decade ago. Clear Beer? :wtf:

It's their take on the Bacardi (Anheuser Busch) and Smirnoff successes.
