I'm doing a dog rescue tomorrow,
and I have to drive from Michigan to West Virgina and back.

I think I should have a caffeine drip I.V.

5. A post I read of yours a few days ago
in GD.. I just remember being taken aback by what you said and your username stuck out at me because of it. It must have been an animal thread.

7. Probably that fur thread..
I was trying to make a point and failed miserably.

I love the furry little bastids, we have three cats, one horse here, two mustangs to be picked up in Arkansas, and tomorrow this dog.

2. Mints.
Seriously - I've found that mints help keep me awake on those long drives.

Good luck to you & the dog!

6. Drive safely and thank you for the dog rescue.
Maybe take some of your favorite music and just do an in-car "concert."

Now and again, stop for some coffee, then it's back on the road & more great music.

Or: take a tape recorder and tape a letter to a friend.

8. What breed are you rescuing?
If you have to go that far, sounds like a rare breed

--we have Tibetan Mastiff ourselves.... check out 'Image' (For some reason a geocities.com linked pic won't show here)

10. Not really rare,
but a nice German Shepherd Dog. His former owner moved from the area and left him tied to a tree with no food and water. He was very thin when he was found. My wife saw him through an e-mail group and fell in love with his picture. We were trying to get a volunteer relay from there, but with it being winter not many folks were keen on taking a leg of the journey.

I tried to post a picture from the Humane Association adoption site, but can't find it...

The Mastiff is a gorgeous dog.

22. I don't know of them,
my wife handled the details with a rescue site, she tried a couple of different forums.

It was explained to her that winter rescues are harder to get volunteers for. I know she had tried for a several weeks to get the legs filled.

12. I need to get some good karma going for me,
I am at a bit of a deficit.

Mrs. Dave works from home and wants a good buddy with her while I do 10-12 hour afternoon shifts.

I have a feeling I'll be fighting for bed space...

15. As a rescuer...
1. Thanks for taking the dog in;

2. Thanks for the long drive;

3. Thanks for (what looks to be) future volunteering. Volunteers come before donations as the lifeblood of any rescue. We need more folks like you. Rolling rescue participation is the Double Jeopardy! in the karmic game show of life.

We adopted a St. Bernard from rescue. What a sweetie. Stubborn, though. But it's OK, I'm a bit stubborn myself. :D

Safe journey.

Have a wonderful time. Do you have any good books on tape? Sometimes a good story helps me stay awake...

Let us know how he is doing when you get back!

19. Rescue update!
We met Austin's (his new name) foster parents in Charleston, West Virginia at 2:00 yesterday afternoon, and he liked us right away.

He is a very sweet dog and rode 8+ hours back to Michigan last night with nary a peep, three potty breaks, and a cheeseburger. He was worth every bit of the 16 hour round trip.

As soon as I get a photo hosting account I'll have to do a pet picture thread.

My old beater vehicle with 160,000 miles performed flawlessly, as always.

20. Good to hear all went well!
Spoil him rotten, its a hell of a way to start off life, tied to a tree with no food or water. He probably thinks he has died and gone to heaven.

26. Thank you for helping to get a doggie to a forever home.
I do some transports when I can. I get a good feeling that at least I have helped to save one dog or cat's life that would have otherwise been euthanized at some kill shelter.
