So what is a good computer condom?

Norton wants money every year to "re subscribe" Is there a program out there that is NOT for rent, but available on a one time basis? Something that I don't have to keep sending money to?

I personally get free Norton corporate licenses through work, so I use that, but the AVG is good stuff.
