Question about drug testing

Does just inhaling second hand pot make a drug test read positive? My spouse is worried about a random drug test he has to take Monday because of being around our neighbor who smokes pot.

what happened? my spouse got the notice in his box today and he took all evening to tell me he's worried about taking this test.

with us and we were sitting behind a group of people smoking a joint. He was on probation and was being randomly tested. We knew him well enough to know that he did not smoke pot or do any drugs. His probation was for a DUI (alcohol) arrest and it was a true wake up call for him. He joined AA and really did quit drinking. (And still does not drink or do drugs today.)

He really freaked out when these folks lit up the joint and we told him he was being silly, no way would he fail a test because of second hand smoke. Unfortunately, he got called in the next morning (about 12 hours later) for a random pee test and he tested positive for pot.

But like I said, this was a long time ago. Hopefully, the tests are more fair today.

Sounds like they're primarily interested in marijuana (which should be worrying to you), since it's the one whose byproducts wouldn't be flushed out of the system by Monday.

If you are a user. It is like that when at a drug interview they tell you when in the process you will be tested or if you are a temp that has to be drug tested to be hired. They might drug test to appear to be a drug free workplace. If they really want to catch drug users, they'd have a policy like another company that I interviewed with. Their random drug tests involved getting notified when they reported for work and then being immediately taken to the testing site and watched by a human resources person.

They might say "If he's smart enough to stay clean for 72 hours, I guess we'll keep him."

My company tests incoming applicants because 1) they have drunk the drug-free workplace koolaid and 2) they do a LOT of federal work and frequently move people around from project to project and need to be sure they don't get into embarassing situations.

However, they tell applicants up front that they'll be tested. So the message is "if you want to work here, don't be stupid."

Regardless of my opinions about recreational drug use, I have no objection to them discouraging the witless from applying. It only drives up recruitment costs.

I used to inhale first hand pot smoke all the time in the service. I always drank a lot of water and never gave them a sample in the early part of the day. I was tested at least once a month because of my job. Never got popprd on a piss test in 6 yrs.

Tell him to drink as much water as he can this weekend and he should be fine. I think High Times had an article about beating piss tests.

That light pot smokers can test negative in a couple of days, while heavy smokers clean out in a month.

If you want some peace of mind, you can get a drug testing kit at the pharmacy (about $10) and check it yourself. I used it to test whether the masking kits work. They did for me.

My sister works for a drug testing agency and she swears none of them work. But I sure have heard a lot of people say they do work.

What worked in my test, and worked on the job, is called XXTRA CLEAN is distributed by Detoxify, and made by One Source in Lake Bluff IL, 60044. (I kept the box.) It cost $50 in the head shop.

However, they never told me I passed, I infer that from the fact that I got hired.

I took a home test, failed, tried the "stuff" took another home test and passed. Then I had another box of stuff for the real test. Yes, that adventure cost me $120 all together, but it worked.

The XXtra Clean did not taste bad either. There are some less expensive masking agents even by the same company, but this was the "heavy duty" one and I wanted not to take chances.

According to my web research, these things work in ordinary testing that companies do, but not in very sophisticated, and expensive, gas chromatograph tests.

Especially if it isn't gas chromatograph. I have heard that second hand smoke doesn't cause positives but having gotten high off of second hand smoke, I am not so sure. Regardless, a couple of days of not getting exposure should clean him up. As someone else mentioned, have him try out a home drug test to be sure.

That said, I think it's unlikely (though, not impossible) that second hand inhalation would cause a positive test result.

Edit: 'gotta make sure that pee remains at body temperature. I put it in a plastic test tube shaped vial wrapped in aluminum foil, then stuff it up in the crotch area. Less than comfy, but the results haven't failed me.
