Mr. Bouncy hasn't smoked a cigarette in six weeks today!

I have my fingers crossed that, one day at a time, he'll continue to be a nonsmoker.

He has bad allergies and chronic bronchitis. No one really should smoke, but people like him least of all.

He started when he was 17 and in the Army. He'd smoke two packs a day and guzzle "lifer juice" (coffee).

He once quit for 18 months shortly after we found out I was pregnant. Then he says he got stressed out one day and went back to it.

I hope to GOD this is permanent. He would have coughing fits, get sick all the time, always going to the doctor.

What did it this time was our daughter (10) wrote him a poem about how she didn't want her dad to die and she read it out loud to him and broke down crying while she read it. All his coughing was making her more and more scared. She doesn't cry easily and I guess that got to him.

I'm trying to kiss him more often as motivation. He tastes much better, LOL!

It is not easy, but he is well on his way!

I thought I heard once that there is a certain time that, after that, your chances of staying quit are a lot better. Is it three months?

I think everyone is different, but I think the longer you stay quit, the less likely you are to go back to it.

I quit 15 years ago.

And congrats! 15 years, wow. My mother in law quit when she had an asthma attack that nearly killed her. The doctor in the ER said it's either cigarettes or living.

She chose to live.

it must be continued for about 6 weeks. For example, if you are not a bedmaker and want to get into a habit of making your bed every morning, then you need to make reminders to make your bed every morning for the next 6 weeks. After that, it will be habit and you will not need any further reminders.
Hopefully, it will be the same with smoking. If you are able to stop for 6 weeks, then it should be easier after that (you have lost the habit of running to the store for cigs, not emptying ashtrays, buying lighters, etc).

I quit 10 years ago. There is no denying it is extremely difficult, it is an addiction after all.

Things have changed...there are drugs that can help, such as Wellbutrin. Also patches and gum. My sister works with a guy who was a 3-pack a day smoker, his doctor prescribed something like Wellbutrin and he was able to cut down drastically and eventually quit.

Has Mr. Bouncy seen a doctor?

This time, I don't know, he just decided to do it cold turkey. I guess he's pretty damn motivated because cold turkey never worked for him before.

My grandfather gave up smoking after 50 years of it. He was told he was developing emphysema and gave it up that day. He was 72 years old. Left a pack with three cigarettes in it on his nightstand and never touched it. Damn. I couldn't have been that strong, but I guess his fear of emphysema was stronger.

I had a bad cold which left me with a constant painful cough. I had a very scary premonition that if I didn't quit I would end up with a lingering, debilitating illness. That along with the fact that I got dirty looks all the time, (we had entered the era where smokers were considered evil) was enough to give me the motivation to quit.

I gave up smoking a couple of years ago and I know how hard it is. He's got through the first few weeks which are the hardest, I hope he sticks in there! :) :hi:

A: I don't know, I never looked.

According to the smiley chart, that little icon means "hurts" although it never made that much sense to me either.
