Poll question: DUers, do you play Computer Games?

I've played games in virtually every genre since the 80's, and have had favorites/obsessions in each one. Above is a pic from my current obssession, World of Warcraft, which is also my first ever RPG of any kind. Thank you very much, my wife, for addicting me to WarCrack!

online on Battlenet.

They just patched it up to 1.12 or something this past week. SC/BW is my all time favorite game out of many favorites. I have had the most fun playing missions and online.

39. WC II
And I still like the original WC. I felt disappointed by WCIII.

I might take you up on the Starcraft game (love Brood Wars) but it will be after the NCAA tournament & the city elections in April. I am part of the Phog Phlock and basketball is my current addiction. Every year between "Late Night in the Phog" and the end of the NCAA Men's Basketball tournament I have no spare time. The reason I married my husband is because he is the only man who has ever understood (and not interfered/criticized) me about my passion for basketball (all teams, he usually just watches the Jayhawks) and computer games. Of course, I give him the same respect for his passion of his PS games and his Hitler/History channel obsessions. We share a love for politics.

I do love gaming, but I've never really had the setup. I generally stick to console games, but I do like computer gaming as well. I've never ventured much outside the puzzle games though, but I did get really into Sim City 2000 and Worms. Man, Worms is one of the greatest games ever.

But I think it's because they're amazingly fun.

They are very easy to play but they still can be challenging when you must adjust for environmental factors while playing.

Plus you get to use a ninja rope. And there's the exploding sheep and the holy hand grenade.

Man, I need to find my copy.

19. Yes - and it's a great deal of fun.
I do NASCAR Sim racing.

PAPYRUS/Sierra released a series of games from 2000 to 2004 called "NASCAR RACING" and they are incredibly realistic.

I guess EA Sports threw a bunch of money at NASCAR and PAPYRUS/Sierra stopped making the game after the 2003 NASCAR season.

I got the whole setup - steering wheel and shifter console /gas and brake pedals, surround sound and when the engines are roaring it's freaking awesome.

The DOLBY surround sound allows you to hear cars coming up on you from behind and when there is a crash it's mayhem.

I've been in a few leagues, and we do on-line racing, so I am racing against other idiots like me, and it's highly competitive.

When you get close to another car, you can feel the draft pulling you along, and you can see your speed increase.

I've done thousands and thousands of laps at a number of tracks and I ain't even close to being good.
Some of these guys spend countless hours tweaking their car setups and paint jobs.

Here's one of my many rides at Coca-Cola speedway during a practice run.

You can race at night too, at Daytona and Lowe's and Texas and even at Bristol which is unbelievably tough.

I read where a lot of rookie NASCAR drivers use the game to improve their reactions and even to become familiar with tracks they haven't raced on, like the road courses.

I may crank it up later on tonight since the NEXTEL boys are off Sunday!

Vroom! Vroom! Vrrrrroooooooooommmmmmmmmm!!!!!!!!

You might feel that's lame but I think it's great. One of the reasons I stopped playing MMORPGs was they had very little do with actual RPGs. I've been hearing quite a lot of good things about WoW. I just may have to give it a try one of these days.

IMHO, "Eljiah" sounds a lot better than "Jefflebowski." ;)

something.

My wife who plays WoW did kill a player named KarlRove though, an undead mage. We decided he was probably more likely to be a liberal with an ironic player name than a wingnut, but still, with a name like that you gotta expect to get killed some.

She's killed him twice, actually.

At university along with a couple of chums I found an obscure share-ware game called 'Space Empires' where you develop technologies, and colonise other planets, design space-ships &c. I love to feel the power flowing through my finger-tips.

Not bothered by good graphics &c., just need to kill lots of opponenets.

I suppose this means I should join the Republican Party......

also good, although the online play through Westwood was WAY buggy compared with Blizzard's Battlenet.

The rest of the C&C games I couldn't really tell you about. I guess Dune II, the progenitor of C&C, really gave birth to the RTS industry such as it is now. I don't know if Dune II or Warcraft I came out first.

Edited on Sat Mar-05-05 04:39 PM by Anarcho-Socialist
made by the Swedish company Paradox. They're by far the most complex and most engrossing games I've ever played. They are:

* Europa-Universalis II (Pick any country in the world between 1419-1819 and go for colonisation, world conquest or whatever you want to do)
* Victoria: Empire under the Sun (similar, but set between 1835 and 1919)
* Hearts of Iron 2 (join the Axis, Allies or Comintern and change the outcome of WW2 for better or for worse in the years 1936 to 1948)

They have similar things in common, such as advanced world diplomacy (alliances and treaties), trade (merchants, trade embargos, trade agreements), Research and Development (army, navy, airforce, industrial, doctrines) construction (improving infrastructure, building forts and military units) and good old fashioned warfare.)

The screenshots are too big to post here. Here's a couple of examples. (these are from HOI2)

44. I play all sorts of games
The games I've played most recently

Counter-Strike: Source
Half-Life 2
Doom 3
Rome: Total War
Hitman series
Diablo 2
Neverwinter Nights
Blockland (free game where you build with legos :))
Battlefield 1942

Good RPGs:
Knights of the Old Republic
Baldur's Gate 1 & 2
Icewind Dale 1 & 2
Neverwinter Nights
(pretty much anything Bioware puts out :))

Games I'm looking foward to:
Call of Cthulhu: Dark corners of the Earth
Doom 3 expansion
Neverwinter Nights 2

The one type of game I don't play:
Massive Multiplayer Online RPGs (like World of Warcraft, or Everquest). Soul-crushingly boring games that you have to keep paying for in order to play. Horrible horrible horrible. I guess I'm from the school of thought that if you are going to call something an RPG, it should at least have some kind of plot.

47. I am constantly buying more and more PC games.
I grew up on the 8-bit Nintendo and 16-bit Sega Genesis but consoles can't hold my interest anymore. I think I first fell in love with the world of PC gaming after being introduced to LucasArts' adventure games (Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, Day of the Tentacle, Sam & Max, Monkey Island, etc.) -- it's led to all sorts of genres though I do miss those LucasArts golden years.

ATM, I'm playing the new expansion for The Sims 2. I'm always diving into Counter-Strike: Source, though I do miss Day of Defeat (always believed DOD was a better and more enjoyable HL mod than CS). I was completely blown away by Half-Life 2.

I finished Knights of the Old Republic 2 a couple weeks ago and was fairly dissapointed with it (plot-wise, character-wise, etc.) though I still enjoyed the time I spent playing it.

I tried the MMORPG scene for a while -- was a beta tester for Star Wars: Galaxies and had an account with them for over a year. MMORPGs became very boring for me -- they felt more like work than actual fun, though I have heard some very good things about World of Warcraft. I may dive into this genre later on.

Some of my all-time favorites include: Grim Fandango (probably my favorite out of LucasArts' adventure games), The Longest Journey (another adventure), Mafia, Half-Life 1 & 2 (and their mods), the Madden series, The Sims 1 & 2 (customization is the key to creating a lasting game), Knights of the Old Republic I (definitely not the sequel), and for good measure -- Sid Meier's Pirates.

60. I was heartbroken when LucasArts axed the sequel.
It's mindboggling to see how far they've fallen in terms of quality since their golden years...
