NFL: 'Gay' now OK!

For just $79.99, NFLShop.com will personalize a replica of your team's favorite jersey with your name or nickname on the back.

As long as your name isn't Lesbian.

Or Barf. Or Pimpjuice. Or 420.

Gay, however, is now OK.

After several days of ridicule and protest from Internet bloggers and gay-rights activists, the NFL's brass gave the league's official online shop the green light yesterday to sell personalized jerseys with "gay" on the back, removing it from its list of 1,159 banned words and phrases.

9. If only there could be openly gay men in the NFL.
But, well..."gay" is only for NFL jerseys. It sure as fuck doesn't translate into inclusion in the League itself...or professional football in general.

14. gay men HAVE been in professional sports...
Dave Kopay in football, Billy Bean and Glenn Burke in baseball. Of course, they came out AFTER they left professional sports. They wouldn't have dared during their professional careers.

Which is really kind of sad. Who the fuck really cares if so and so, who is openly gay, is a cornerback for the Chicago Bears? Or if so and so, who's openly gay, is shortstop for the Los Angeles Dodgers?

It's just patently absurd. But speaking as a gay man, maybe I'm too close to the issue to look at it realistically.

16. Because gay men can't play SPORTS...
I mean, they would have a constant erection. Just like gay men can't fight wars because they'd be groping their fellow soldiers in the midst of battle! Oh wait, disregard the thousands of years of athleticism and successful warfare, a large portion of which was due to and/or dominated by gay and bisexual men.

13. Oh yeah, that's right - personalized
I forgot that point.

So, people will really pay $80 for a sports jersey, just because it's personalized?

I am so totally in the wrong business.

17. Yes, they talk about that in the article, it's what started it all...
Quote:

The league has been plagued for years by allegations of homophobia and gay-bashing, but spokesman Dan Masonson said yesterday the NFL does not consider the word "gay" objectionable. New England Patriots cornerback Randall Gay has personalized jerseys for sale, Masonson said; the league used to offer replica jerseys from former NFL players William Gay and Ben Gay. "Gay should never have been in our filter," he said.

Tongue, however, remains on the list, which will disappoint fans of Jets safety Reggie Tongue.

The controversy began shortly after the Super Bowl, when Louisiana State professor Leigh Clemons tried to purchase a Patriots jersey with "gay" on the back. Clemons was moved by Gay pride, not gay pride: her former student, Randall Gay, was a rookie cornerback with the Super Bowl champion Patriots this past season.

Clemons says she became a fan when Gay was a student in her Introduction to Women's and Gender Studies class last spring (the class, incidentally, addressed gay awareness issues). Gay, occupied by the birth of his son, fell behind in his studies, but with her help, he caught up and completed his course work by the end of the semester.

19. The New England Patriots Have A Player Named, "Gay"
Randall Gay is his full name. He's a rookie, and he played a big part in their SB victory. What if I want to wear his jersey?
