Just my thoughts (Rev thinks? Run for your lives!!!)
Last night I was depressed because life is complicated right now, and I just felt so lost and confused as to what to do. So I was feeling sorry for myself last night, and crying.

Then my tears changed in nature. They turned into sobs, sobs because I wondered how it was I came to be here, in the United States. As a person who has no faith in a higher power, to me it’s just luck of the draw. But I feel guilty for my luck. I live in this country, that offers to much opportunity.

I think of all I have that I take for granted, electricity, clean water, and food. I don’t have to worry about if I’ll eat tomorrow. I don’t have worry that a solider is going to come raid my house. I don’t have to worry that I’ll be killed or persecuted for my beliefs (or lack of). And yet I complain about my life? It’s not right, I have everything.

I am thankful to live here. I disagree with the way this country is being led, what we’re doing in this world, but I am thankful I live here.

It’s unfair for me to here, when I’m sure there are many, much more deserving, people out there. People who would to do good with opportunities that every American has. Opportunities for a good education.

We are lucky in many, many ways. And we’re only here because of luck. Some people will say that it’s God’s will that they were born here, or something like that, but I don’t believe in God. So I think it’s all luck, I could have easily been born some where in Africa. Or in Iraq, or Afghanistan.

Life is such a funny thing, such a fleeting thing.

I wish I was better, I wish I could use the things I have that I have in front of me. Or at least give them to someone who would use them. I wish this world was different. I wish life was better for everyone, I wish we could stop hating each other. I wish we could stop destroying each other.

I wish everything was just… better.

9. Well, it's good that you took some time to recognize how good
you, I, we have it. Anyone that has the time and ability to post on DU pretty much has it decent compared to the majority of the world's population. That still doesn't mean we shouldn't strive to make it better, because unlike that fuckwit Reagan's trickle-down economic theory, I believe that happiness does trickle down - rather trickle outwards much like ripples in a pond.

:-)

10. That was a lovely analogy;
"rather trickle outwards much like ripples in a pond."

I really like that. :)

12. Wow. I agree with you so much.
It's funny, this morning, I was out blockwalking with someone, and he asked me why I am so politically involved, why I bust my ass and go to townhall meetings on social security and lobby days and go out and get signatures on petitions and write emails and follow legislation and call my senators... and I didn't really know what to say. I just kind of shrugged and I said, "because I believe in taking care of the world" or something trite like that.

But you just said EXACTLY what I feel and why I do what I do.

Because I have so much, I feel like I owe the world a lot.

Thanks!

17. Thanks for your post Rev
For what it's worth I believe that we can make things better. For example by posting here at DU we all are connecting with people around the world, brainstorming ideas, relating to others, expressing our thoughts, feelings and ideas. You are using what you have in front of you by writing here, and letting us know your thoughts, feelings and ideas,

18. That you realize this, makes you deserving.
It's those that think that they're better, or their God is more approving of them, and that's why they're here, who don't deserve to be Americans.

If everyone thought this way, there would be no foolish wars, as there'd be reason and a deficit of lies. If everyone thought this way, realized these things, the world would just be a much better place. Imagine if "America" realized how great it is to be America, and decided to spread it around. Not force it around, or trade it around, or pass it around ONLY if it benefits us more than them. This is still the best country in the world, but it's just a little lost right now.

Nice post, BTW.

21. I agree with what you said
Reading all that made me think about all the stuff I have & how I dont even think anything about going and buying something new- or going through the grocery store & grabbing whatever I feel like getting. When in other countries (too many to name) they dont have the luxury of thinking about what kind of sleeve they should buy for their i-pod, wondering when their People magazine subscription will expire, they arent trying to figure out when they will have time to get their nails filled & the certainly aren't taking the supermarket for granted. Or prescription drugs.

There are countless things that happen every day that we take for granted. Your right, we all should count our blessings. We are all fortunate enough to have so many things that to us are necessities & to others are luxuries... or things they cant even imagine.

I really hope that you aren't depressed. Your such a lovely person & I hate to think of you labeling yourself as not being "good enough"!!!!

24. Also
It takes an enlightened caring heart to realize how fortunate you are. Many, many people never will. They will take for granted each and every thing that has come and will come their way.... with nary a thought for the people who weren't born with that chance.
