What song(s) best represent your moods?
I've always observed that whenever I'm listening to music, what I listen to depends greatly on what's happened to me earlier or what's about to happen later. For instance, if I've aced a test and am feeling absolutely euphoric, I'll listen to something like Smash Mouth's "All Star" over and over (don't ask why). If I'm nervous, I play things like Gordon Lightfoot's "Race Among The Ruins" and "Christian Island" to relax me. When I'm particularly politically fired, such as during Election 2004's debate nights, or the State of Delusion, I play a lot of Green Day and NoFx, favorites being "American Idiot," "Minority," and "Franco Un-American."

I was wondering what you guys did for "mood" music. What do you like to listen to when you're:

...really happy?
...sad or despondent?
...nervous or edgy?
...politically fired?
...feeling romantic?
...coming off a breakup?

I'll post my responses later, but I'd really like to know what you all listen to.

5. I Just Listened to 'Streets on Fire' By Porno For Pyros
Is that indicative of my mood? :grr: :nuke: :grr:

STREETS ON FIRE

5-King-15 to 15-Adam
1-1-4 to all units, be advised the verdicts have come in
Verdicts are not guilty, repeat not guilty
5-King 15-adam come in
15-Adam come in

Yeah, hit the spider
Ride out the rider
Get lit the fired up
Lit the fired up
It's me, rhyme-maker
Double eyed salt and pepper shaker
Semi-valley earthquaker for acres
Outlaw law breakers
Nigga
Its on on sight
Dark Blue black and white fight
Forever, I pulled the war lever .44s
And nickle plated Beretta
To pierce armor and leather is pure havoc
The streets is on pure fire
Get folded like envelopes
I suffocate hope
Equipped with shells, boxed with full scopes
One incident reshapes the globe

A creep in the morning that becomes daylight
I walk to the beat, to the beat
So who was going out with me tonight?
We're running out into the street tonight
I love life
I mean well
I've been told I can't control myself
Hear me out
Something I wanna do
Hear me out
Something I want to say
Streets on fire
I wanna get higher

(Kurupt)
A creep in the morning that becomes daylight
(Yeah, so don't say nothin
I want it all emptied or I'ma start bustin)
I walk to the beat, to the beat
(Higher, higher, burning fire
Making music like a choir)
I'm trusted by the people like the crust on an apple pie
(To start the riot grip the heat and start the firin)
I'm buffin up my badge and a lean mean to spit in your eye
(Hot supplying, multipy through the fire riots)
I love life
(I'm twice as nice)
And I like to live it well
(The streets is a living hell)

6. Really eclectic choices.
Happy: It varies a lot. In-your-face Irish material is good, such as Finbar Furey's version of "New York Girls" from The Gangs of New York, or Gaelic Storm's manic take on "Courtin' in the Kitchen." I also like Kate Rusby's lighter stuff on her Underneath the Stars album.

Sad: The Band. Rick Danko's vocals on "It Makes No Difference," in particular. The Band also did great versions of "The Great Pretender" and "Share Your Love with Me."

Edgy: Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J., by Bruce Springsteen, especially "For You" and "Growing Up." Blue Rodeo is good, too.

Politically fired: Parry's "Jerusalem," by whatever chorus is handy.

Romantic: Elizabethan music or classic jazz vocals (Think Ella Fitzgerald, Joe Williams et al).

Breakup: Tracy Chapman or the Band.

9. He did indeed.
Danko's voice bespoke vulnerability, not that Richard Manuel or Levon Helm were slouches in registering emotion.

10. Did you ever hear him do "Too Soon Gone", off of Jericho?
It was incredible. And Manuel doing "Country Boy"...that gave me goosebumps.

They had three amazing singers.

8. The Pasadena Roof Orchestra has become an addiction.
I have an eclectic collection of music on my iPod: From The Beatles to John Mayer. From Joni Mitchell to Sarah Vaughan. And everything in between, I have a lot. And yet ever since a friend turned me on to them over Thanksgiving, I have sought out their various incarnations over the years and still can’t get enough. It’s almost like a drug that I can only summarize with, “Who needs Prozac if you can foxtrot?”

All my great play-lists from other artists no longer seem to fit the bill. I even have a bash-Bush* play list that no longer seems to matter. Maybe I’m self-medicating. Rather than choosing music that reflects a particular mood, I’m choosing music to impose or sustain an upbeat, happy mood… as false as that may be.

I guess it kind of makes sense that this is the genre that was happening during the “Roaring Twenties” and “The Great Depression.” Check it out if you are so inclined.

Yuk, hate that song.
But I often love to indulge in songs that put me in a naustalgic mood, such as Letterman songs, ex. The Way You Look Tonight.

The early Beatle's music mellows out my mood when I am antsy.

I love Big Band early 40's music...makes me happy.

14. Well, before this thread fades into irrelevance, I'll post mine
Happy? Smashmouth's "All Star," any Weird Al Yankovic stuff

Sad? Evanescence, all the time, for hours on end. "Hello," "My Immortal," "Bring Me To Life," "Anywhere," "Going Under," and "Tourniquet" are some favorites.

Nervous? Usually I'll try to calm myself with Gordon Lightfoot or a little James Taylor, like "Handy Man," "Your Smiling Face," "Mexico," "Carolina In My Mind," and others.

Politically fired up? It's Green Day and NoFx who carry the day, with all those songs I mentioned above and more. Plus Bruce Springsteen and my "O'Franken Factor Factor" CD.

Romantic? Phil Collins, Peter Gabriel, and yes, some country love songs, like Chris Cagle's "What A Beautiful Day" or Tim McGraw's "Amazed By You."

Coming off a breakup? I've only done this once, but when I did, it was lots of Evanescence and Simple Plan, particularly the songs "Don't Wanna Think About You," "Everybody's Fool," and "Imaginary."
