90% of it is meaningless tabloid rubbish. I'm reading a book right now called "Bad News" which is about exactly that - the decline of television news.

5. I selected B.B.C. World
But as I'm in the U.K. it's just plain B.B.C.

I don't watch much T.V. news, but flicking onto B.B.C. News24, and combining that with the on-screen text is a good way of getting the basics of what's happenning quickly.

Seriously. At my job, we have CNN going constantly, but luckily my desk faces away from the TV. Although I catch the occasional bit of story that way, The Daily Show engages my full attention, and I learn more from Jon Stewart & Co.
