Hello and welcome to Monday's 'IN' The Undergroundrailroad a place, deep inside of DU, where we jump-start our week ahead! To those at home today, welcome and I hope you'll take advantage of your day off and visit the Undergroundrailroad today. If new to the UGRR, I'll roll out the "red carpet" (yes, it's real) and give you your props. We have lots of love to share so jump down and join us.



Our dessert for today is Chocolate Layer Cake with alternating layers of fudge cake and chocolate buttercream. Perfect with a little champagne!

HE'S GOT GAME -- REP. DENZEL WASHINGTON -- SENATOR DENZEL WASHINGTON -- PRESIDENT ?

Can we show someone how to be a President ? How about a Governor? Has politics become the equivalent of teaching someone to drive a stick shift car while having them sit in the passenger seat? I can *hear* THE Arnold bragging, 'watch me, watch me!', quickly popping the clutch, easing the accelerator and moving the gears swiftly into position. BUT? Does the person sitting away from the steering wheel *know* what happened so they can dupe the same motions? Would you like an airline pilot trained in a similar nature? OK, how about a surgeon? Of course NOT! Yet, CA elected Arnold Schwarzenegger in less than six weeks. WHY? Are celebrities and their name recognition next in line to have mountains named after them, to be elected to Congress, to the Senate *or* to the Presidency? Well, I'm going to throw out a name in the political arena.

Denzel Washington has intellectual weight, spiritual gravity and a powerful sexual presence. Now, what does a "powerful sexual presence" have to do with getting elected??? Ohhhhhh, NOTHING! Disregard that last comment.

Back to intellect. Denzel Washington was born in Mt. Vernon, New York. Denzel, son of a preacher man, wanted a career in journalism. He entered Fordham University in 1972 to begin work on a college degree in premedicine. To pay his expenses, he acquired several loans and ran an afterschool babysitting service at a Greek Orthodox Church in Upper Manhattan. He dropped out of school one semester due to poor grades and worked at the post office and then as a trash collector, but soon returned to Fordham. During a summer job at a camp, he made a recitation on stage that set the direction of his career. He was lauded for his natural acting ability and enrolled in a theater workshop. Changing his career plans, he dropped premedicine as a major and embraced journalism. Denzel graduated from Fordham University, receiving a B.A. in Journalism. His goal now set in a new direction, acting became a focus for Denzel. He took that degree, his imposing presence, that unequivocal speech and headed to the West Coast. In a Newsweek cover story about the biological basis of the perception of beauty, he was used as a key example in a scientific explanation why he is considered an "extremely handsome man". PERCEPTION IN POLITICS? Why ????? YES! *I* mean NO, Damit!

Dezel's trademark in Hollywood is portraying real people. For example, Reuben Carter in The Hurricane, Malcolm X in Malcolm X, Herman Boone in Remember the Titans. He once said "I've been fortunate. I don't pick scripts. Scripts pick me." Yet he says: "To be honest with you, I'm not a film buff. I don't watch a lot of movies. I'm just not a movie person. I wasn't allowed to go to movies when I was kid; my father was a minister - 101 Dalmatians and King of Kings, that was the extent of it." Nonetheless, the strikingly handsome leading man has transported audiences time after time, with courageous roles in sweeping dramas, legal thrillers, action pictures and period pieces.

He can also be confrontational. According to a 1995 Premiere magazine article, Denzel confronted director Quentin Tarantino when he visted the set of Crimson Tide. Quentin had done an uncredited rewrite of the script. Denzel lambasted Tarantino about his use of racial slurs in his films. Tarantino got embarrassed and wanted to move the conversation to a more private area. Denzel said, "No, if were going to discuss it, let's discuss it now." Denzel later said he still felt that Quentin was "a fine artist". Further, about race and himself: "I'm very proud to be black, but black is not all I am. That's my cultural historical background, my genetic makeup, but it's not all of who I am nor is it the basis from which I answer every question." Confrontation and politics, is a "good thing" ? I'll answer pre-emptively, 'YES, YES, YES!'

Denzel's trademark for success in portraying a character has been to learn as much about the individual as possible, including his social, historical. and political environment. With this kind of dedication and zeal to be true to the character, why not a President Washington, Senator Washington, Governor Washington? IMO, Denzel Washington is just as qualified to become "Governor" (shake me, wake me) as Arnold Schwarzenegger (is the recall over??). Denzel, however, may be reluctant to take on politics as a "character". But I keep telling myself his last name is *WASHINGTON* (a tricky word).

Have I sold my point DU? Well, if Dezel ever runs for elected office, look for *my* placard. I'll call it their *MY* votes and I'm keeping them "plan".

Undercover "Brother" COOL CAT ?

Oh my, my! It was show time in Harlem a week ago (no, not the Apollo!) for Ming the Harlem-dwelling tiger and his "brother", Antoine Yates. You know, I just love this story. A 400 pound tiger in the projects and the cool Antoine Yates who, IMO, handled the public relations end of this story in a "master"ful way! This is how it went. Ming the tiger, Antoine's "brother", (I'll explain that in a minute) bit him in the leg and arm. While Antoine was in Harlem Hospital a tip went to the police (perhaps from the ER Physicians who didn't buy the story that a "pit bull" bit their charge) that a tiger was in Antoine's apartment. Indeed, "Ming" the Siberian-Bengal Tiger, was found and taken to an animal reserve in Ohio. When Antoine was asked "WHY" he kept the tiger, "It was about love. It was about peace. It's about the world. The earth," he said. "My meaning was to show the whole world that we can all get along." "Ming was my brother, not my pet, not my tiger, not my animal . . . I guarantee he feels the same thing inside."

OK Antoine, I believe you! What's wrong with world peace and Tigers as pets ? Well Antoine, it's your world! But if this combination of tiger and man can bring about world peace (because * can't do it)? GO FOR IT! His neighbors vouch for Antoine calling him a caring person who has never caused problems for anyone. Me thinks there is a book, movie and lots of television appearances on CNN (he's on CNN's American Morning as I type!).

Wow a tiger in Harlem. I like the way the Ming situation was handled too, I like the idea that "the wilds" can be brought into something resembling harmony with our most unharmonious species. However, giant predatory animals are nothing to mess with, look at Roy Horn, or that guy who was eaten by Kodiac bears. We are the apex of the food chain only when at a supermarket. Sometime we forget that while we have cars, the Internet, and clothes, we also make a good main course for those predators lacking in technology.

If I remember the quote correctly, "never anger a dragon because you are small and taste good with ketchup."

I've never been a Denzel Washington fan, though I like some of his work with Spike Lee, Malcom X especially, he's made a lot of lousy flicks like Fallen, John Q, and The Bone Collector.

As for this week's questions:

QUESTIONS OF THE DAY

1. PROM POLITICS: If you could take a politician to the prom, who would you take and why? Explain things you would discuss.

Wow, tough question. I am going to go outside my gender here and take former MA governor William Weld to the prom. When I was a poor college kid struggling at Cape Cod Community College he threatened to close our school as a cost cutting initiative. However, we challeneged him, if we could raise 4 million bucks would he match it and keep the school off the cut list. He agreed and while quietly touring the school at the end of the day (he was alone, which was really odd), landed at my table in the dining hall and let me buy him coffee and explain my love for the campus. We talked for over an hour. Two months later he came back with a 4 million dollar check and we stayed open. I always wanted to thank him in person for that afternoon, and to ask him about the hardships in balancing the MA budget. CCCC still operates today.

2. Do you still have a toy from your childhood? What about comics and baseball/football/basketball cards?

I still have all of my comics collection (Marvel titles from 1983-1985 or so). I also keep my lifelong affection for giant monster movies. I have all of the Toho Godzilla catalog and most of the Daiei Gamera and Majin series. I also have tens of toys, books, games, and models of these same icons of giant monster cinema. It's been really fun introducing them to my Son. One of his first words was Godzilla.

3. What is your schedule today?

Work, work, work, 8-5, make dinner and socialize with family, 5-7, Hapkido class, 7:30-9:30, home and kiss the Mrs and son goodnight 10PM, work in fiction/moderate DU 10PM to 1:30 AM.

So you like that tiger? Check this out. The Roy Horn story ( and an extra shout out to Roy! Get well soon) Ming the Harlem tiger, and the unfortunate death of the man and the Kodiac bear seemed to all "break" at the same time. All unrelated but related because of animals in the wildlife. My heart goes out to all the victims but I agree with you BigMc. We should *not* take for granted predatory nature of these animals. I'm sure Mr. Yates will NOT go to jail. And I'm sure many experts will want to study him and how he raised that tiger from a very early age. Once again, the cat did not appear to be neglected in any way.

Yes, Spike Lee and Denzel Washingto made some great movies together and MALCOM X is my favorite.

1. Prom Politics. I like the fact that you answered this question going outside of your gender. This question was meant to be serious as well as funny and I see you approached it in that manner. I loved your answer. MA governor William Weld would be your partner at the prom. What an interesting story!

2. You still have your collections of comics and "giant" monster movies. WOW! I remember Godzilla quite well. I can still watch that movie today and feel the fear in spite of the high-tech. graphics in movies today.

Well it depends on the prom. If it was like my high school prom, I'd take Maxine Waters, Jennifer Granholm, and/or Barbara Lee and discuss favorite movies. Why? 'cause it's supposed to be FUN! OTOH, if it were like Carrie's prom ... I'd take Kay Bailey-Hutchison (for obvious reasons).

2. Do you still have a toy from your childhood? What about comics and baseball/football/basketball cards?

Nope. After moving over a dozen times and not having had many toys (we couldn't afford much), I made myself feel wealthy by donating things to the Salvation Army.

3. What is your schedule today?

"Schedule"? What's that? :shrug: (Practicing being a 'moderate'?)

OK, fast track to the questions:

Your prom date would be Rep.Maxine Waters for "fun" and Senator Kay Bailey-Hutchison if it's the prom from hell. Maxine Waters! WOW! I'm sure she would be a lively date and yes, you would have lots of fun.

Not many toys from you childhood. That's perfectly OK. I love that you donate to The Salvation Army. That is an excellent charity.

But you schedule today/tonight will be doing something you do quite well. Moderate DU.

Wow! President Denzel Washington. Sounds good to me. You always make me think on Monday's Mina. So now I have this thought of Denzel Washington and politics.

Mina, I also like the tiger story. I thought it was funny at first but Mr. Yates seems serious about "his" cat. I'm just hearing another soldier was killed. The war is painful to me. Yes, I want world peace and I think we will achieve it when Bush is gone.

Questions:

I would ask Colin Powell to the prom. I would ask him why he joined the Bush Admin. and why doesn't he quit.

No childhood toys. I once had a doll but gave it to my daughter.

My schedule today is made up of "d's": Doctor's appointment, DU and Dinner.

Well, it worked. That was my plan. Just to make you "think" about the possibility of Denzel running for elected office. He is just as qualified as * or Arnold and we better get used to the idea of pop and politics.

You liked the tiger story. At first I had to adjust my hearing. A tiger in Harlem?? But when I heard the entire story, I also liked it. Mr. Yates told CNN's American Morning today that he actually slept with the tiger (ouch!). I just don't think I could wake up every morning and look into the eyes of a tiger, LOL.

It's a beautiful day here in Michigan and my answers would be:

1.Jimmy Carter. Because he epitomizes (in modern presidents) what the office of President should be about. I think we would discuss his work with the forgotten underclass. Now, on cuteness factor I would take senator Feingold from WI...mmmmMMMMmmm.

2.All of my toys from childhood are still in a storage shed that my father has kept and not gone through for over 20 years. I know I have a billion dollars worth of old barbies in there...;)

3. Today it's laundry(snort, yeah right), son to school, come home and do a haircut, type 3 appraisals, back to school to help with kindergarten computers, pick up kids take one to orthodontist then home for dinner. I hope it runs smoothly.

Ming the tiger. I have to say the tiger was in excellent condition and Mr. Yates did an excellent job caring for Ming, under the circumstances. I saw the segment on CNN this morning and Mr. Yates does come off as cool and calm. Mina, cool "underbrother", your play on words is so good. Your playing off the movie UNDERCOVER BROTHER, yes?

Now, for Denzel. Has he ever discussed politics before. I get the feeling that he doesn't like the limelight. I do agree he has great name recognition. Question, are we ready for a black president? I'm not sure, even if the person running is Denzel Washington. I do think anything is possible. I like Denzel in all of Spike Lee's movies. He *was* Malcom X. I wish more black celebs would talk about their politics perhaps inspiring more African-Americans to vote.

Let's get to it ;-) The questions of the day in the UGRR, my favorite Monday hang.

1. I would ask Jackie Kennedy to the prom. I would just sit there and look, she is beautiful.

2. Yes. I still have my basketball cards and my HESS toy trucks.

Wow, chocolate cake looks good this morning. However, I've already had my coffee and yogurt so I'd better pass! I'll look longingly at it, though! :)

You have me totally convinced that Denzel should run for political office ASAP! I've always thought he was an intelligent, compelling (and yes hot as HELL :evilgrin: ) guy. So we should start a "Draft Denzel!" movement!

Hmm, I dunno about this Antoine Yates. It seems he had the best of intentions, and he seems like he has a good heart. But it is simply morally wrong to keep a tiger in a Harlem apartment. Tigers are not meant to be confined by humans. Many times, when a wild animal is kept inappropriately like that, they attack their owners and then are killed for it. Thank goodness that's not the case here. I hope Antoine recovers soon, but I also hope he has learned his lesson and sticks to cats and dogs from now on. They can be "brothers" too, you know. :)

On to the questions...

1. I would take Bill Clinton, because he is brilliant and I find him quite attractive. I would talk to him about world politics, the economy, and social domestic issues. Also music and sports. :)

2. I don't think I have any toys from my childhood. The one I hung on to the longest was a dollhouse that my uncle hand made for me, and then he built lots of hand-made furniture for it for years afterward. I had that until I was in my early 20's, and finally gave it to the daughter of a friend to enjoy. It's the sentimental ones that are the hardest to give up.

3. My schedule is the normal Monday hell, but your daily sure does brighten up my day. :hi:

Our politics has changed forever and if we want those in office who are going to be kind to *OUR* agenda, we better start looking at those who can win.

For goodness sake, don't show this thread to my wife! She'll go crazy! If the chocolate layer cake doesn't do it, Denzel Washington will! We can't watch any of his movies, Much Ado About Nothing especially, without her going into raptures. "Oh! What a BEAUTIFUL man! Oh, catch me! Oh mercy!" I mean, I can see he's handsome, but come ON! :-) My favorite performance of his is in "Glory". It was interesting to see him play an unlikeable character. "Philadelphia" was another good one. A man who may possibly have experienced prejudice himself exhibiting a prejudice of his own. Complicated character.

Okay, now to the questions:

1.) Hmm. Tough one. I would have to say either Madeleine Albright, Hillary Clinton, or Nancy Pelosi. All three are smart, tough attractive women. Granted, you don't need 'tough' at the Prom, but I like a woman who can take care of herself. For some reason, I've always found the name "Hillary" unspeakeably sexy. :-)

2.) I still have the legion of Star Wars action figures that my brother and I collected as kids. They are in a box somewhere in the depths of my mother's house. Haven't seen 'em in ages.

3.) I'm cleaning the house for the realtor. (My wife and I are thinking about buying a new house.) Then, school this afternoon, and this evening, meeting with the realtor.

I have always loved his performance in the movie GLORY. That is a very painful movie for me to watch and I have it on DVD. Her performance was deserving of the Academy Award that he won. Malcom X is my second favorite. Many thought he should have received an Oscar nomination for X. He certainly prepared well for the role and looked just like Malcom.

OK, fast track to the questions:

Prom Politics: Madeleine Albright, Hillary Clinton or Nancy Pelosi dates for the prom. Excellent choices. Why not take all three? I'm sure the four of you would have a lot to discuss (topic one, how to get * outta the White House). I like the name Hillary. That's all you have to say, Hillary. Everyone in the world knows who she is.



Childhood toys: Star Wars action figures! My older son had the entire collection. Better look for them Aristus and enjoy those childfood memories.

Schedule: Cleaning house for realtor! OK, good luck with the potential sale and advise. Then off to school and finishing off your schedule with the realtor again.

So much good stuff to discuss. First things first -- chocolate cake and champagne is one of my favorite food/drink combinations. It doesn't get better than that. It's not even 11:00 AM and I'm dreaming of a slab of cake and some chilled moet y chandon. Yummy.

Hmmm. Denzel in politics. I like it. Do you realize if he got elected to president, Denzel would be the second President Washington?! I can visualize it. Having come from humble beginnings I bet he would be truly a compassionate leader.

The first boycott I ever participated in was my junior and senior proms. They wouldn't allow my best friend (who was a work-study student) to attend so a bunch of us boycotted the proms altogether. I never thought a Catholic school would openly demonstrate such contempt for low-income students.

OK, I'd probably ask Mayor Street. There's a lot of drama surrounding him right now in Philly. I'd ask him about why he thinks the feds are suddenly interested in him when he's in the middle of a tight re-election campagin.

2. Do you still have a toy from your childhood? What about comics and baseball/football/basketball cards?

No, but I'd have to check my mom's basement, you never know. I loved horror comics and Mad magazine. My mom used to say I'd rot my brain with that stuff but I loved it.

3. What is your schedule today?

Work. Taking one of my best friends in the world to lunch on his birthday. More work. Home to cook dinner. I'm working on antiquing an old bureau so I'll do that after dinner. Hang out with the family. Maybe more DU before bed.

Yes, Denzel would be able to relate to most of us and has the capacity to be a truly compassionate leader. I hate to say this, but I think that factor helped Arnold. He came to the United States with less than $100.00 and a dream. Sometimes thats all it takes.

What a success story it would be if Denzel could become PRESIDENT WASHINGTON (yes, he would be are second!). Hey today is Monday. We're in the UGRR with our cake and champagne. We can dream and hope.

I've always thought of Denzel Washington as a fine actor. I admire his ability to confront people and issues he disagrees with. I struggle with that, so I admire that trait in others.

A tiger as a pet in the projects? My concern would be that the animal get enough exercise, and not be cooped up. Well, I'd also be concerned that he not eat anyone or anyone's pet. :D Antoine seems like a decent fellow though, but perhaps he should buy a tabby. ;-) I think Ming belongs where he can roam freely (or as freely as possible).

1. I'd take my state rep., Dawnna Dukes. Not only is she lovely, but she's a good liberal. I'm sure we'd have no shortage of things to talk about from politics to our alma mater and beyond.
2. I have lots of them. My parents have most of them, but I've got a few at my place. I have many baseball cards - maybe I can pass them along to a young fan someday. :D
3. Work, then visiting my parents for dinner, then home. A standard Monday. :-)

Thanks for sending the golf cart this way on Mondays. That is the one thing I can count on and I thank you for it.

Now about Ming the tiger. I just can't figure it out. HOW can someone keep a Tiger in that small room (a room called the "play pen") and get the proper amount of exercise, water, etc. Apparently, Antoine had is all figured out. That tiger is in excellent condition! Shiny coat, etc. The doctors at the reserve gave him a clean bill of health. Of course we shoud not keep tigers in our homes but it worked for Mr. Yates for what I call a "New York minute". That's a very longggggg minute but you know when your time is up!

From what I understand, the entire building knew about that tiger and no one seemed bothered. I know as a parent I would have been concerned for the safety of children and adults. I don't know what could have been going on in his mind.

1. I'd have to take Bill Clinton to the prom...he'd be a great date...the conversation would be the ultimate...and uhhhh...I'll just leave it at that :evilgrin:

2. I still have a Barbie house that is an older version circa1970 iit's a pink plastic padded box that opens up into a living room and bedroom and a foyer in the center still with the original furniture....it's really cool..eventhough it was a hand me down...but it's up in my closet....bet it might be worth something someday!! HEY FOUND SOME PIX OF IT....CHECK IT OUT!!! :)

Glad ya liked my Barbie house too...gotta go get it out and *look* at it again....oh and I still have some of my handmade extras in there too...I made a fireplace and telephone...plates with eggs on 'em all out of loose leaf paper and magic markers...did what I had to do as all those accesories were way too 'spensive! ;-) Wish I still had all the dresses and other outfits my graNanny made for me too...dunno what happened to all that stuff over the years? :cry:

I think if I could take any politician to prom it would have to be RFK, Jr. because I've met him before. Even though is a little old for me, his sons would do just as well. Because he's an environmentalist, and a Kennedy, we'd probably talk about that kind of stuff. And crack jokes about Bush. haha :)

2. Do you still have a toy from your childhood? What about comics and baseball/football/basketball cards?

Yes... I still have most everything. Take account my age into that question though.

3. What is your schedule today?

School off! This morning I had some American History work and work for photography class. In the afternoon, I have soccer practice for about an hour and a half.

Prom Politics: You would take Robert F. Kennedy and you have, in fact, met him! WOW! What were the circumstances that led to the meeting? I would love to know. I really liked RFK and I can vividly remember when he was taken from us. What a moment to treasure. And yes, I do believe he would have thought Bush to be joke and a "selected" mistake.

He's not really a politician, he doesn't like to be called that. When we met him he was giving a speech on a dock on Lake George (NY) so people were driving by in their boats with "No Bush" signs and he waved to them. :)

Very few, but there is a good sized liberal contingent up here. As much as is possible in upstate new york. I guess I never realized how many people have been to Lake George, I mean... I live here and see the tourists but never put two and two together! :)

I get NY tv stations on satellite so I saw that story about the tiger in Harlem. I think tigers are absolutely beautiful animals.

Now for your answers...
1) My very first thought was that I'd like to go to the prom with the Boy Wonder, GW Bush. Wait, hear me out first! I thought it would be cool to actually have a one-on-one conversation to find out if he really is as dense as he seems. THen, after I thought about it for like, 2 seconds, I realized I couldn't be caught dead with him and put that ugly thought right out of my head. I'd have to say, currently, I like to have Al Gore as my date. I met him last year and found him thoroughly enchanting. Funny, intelligent, and interesting.

2) My mother threw all my baseball cards out when I went away to college. :( She didn't think girls needed those things. I do have my favorite book still. My uncle gave it to me when I was 9. It was the bggest book I had ever seen at the time. "Richard Halliburton's Complete Book of Marvels". It had stories about places all around the globe. I learned about the Great Wall of China and the Taj Mahal and the Galapagos Islands, to name a few that I remember off the top of my head. It doesn't seem so big now but the stories are still marvels.

3)My schedule? Let me see...when I finish here I need to work-out. Bet you knew I'd say that. ;) I'll do about 40 minutes on my bike and then some weights. Then fix and eat dinner, make some popcorn, turn on the baseball game, and knit a mitten. So much for my day!

Ok, if you went to the prom with * you would need all of us in the UGRR to escort you (this is for your protection). NO way are we going to let our beloved MaineDem go to that prom with him alone. But I get your point. You actually have to see for yourself it this man is as stupid as he looks and acts. Well, let me assure you, he is. Oh, we could watch him get drunk on the punch. I would secretly pour run in it and then ask him: Mr.pResident, do you still drink? Now, why not answer the question with an element of honesty! You should make him do 1000 sit-ups (is that cruel and unusual?) By this time we'll have him directed out to his limo.

ENTER THE REAL PRESIDENT -- AL GORE. Don't you just *love* that picture ;-) We would all have such a fun time with Al Gore! Just to meet him would be grand! How lucky you are!!

Schedule: OK, now I just know you have some element of exercise in your daily schedule and you inspire me every Monday. I actually do something in the form of exercise, like walk! So today, I'll take a nice walk and enjoy our weather (as you can see on the news). So, 40 minutes on the bike then some weights. Wow! I do envy you. Then it's dinner and the game! Yankees and Red Socks are in a duel. Moment-to-moment. WHO will win?
