What is the meaning of this song?
THE WHO - Sister Disco Lyrics
As I walked through that hospital door
I was sewn up like a coat
I got a smile from the bite of the wind
Watched the fresh fall of snow

I knew then that my life took a turn
I felt strong and secure
And with adhesive tape over my nose
I felt almost demure

Goodbye Sister Disco
With your flashing trash lamps
Goodbye Sister Disco
And to your clubs and your tramps

Goodbye Sister Disco
My dancing's left you behind
Goodbye, now you're solo
Black plastic; deaf, dumb and blind

Bye, goodbye Sister Disco, Now I go
I go where the music where the music fits my soul
And I, I will never let go, I'll never let go
'Til the echo of the street fight has dissolved

I will choose nightmares and cold stormy seas
I will take over your grief and disease
I'll stay beside you and comfort your soul
When you are lonely and broken and old

Now I walk with a man in my face
Ooh, a woman in my hair
I've got you all lookin' out though my eyes
My feet are a prayer

Goodbye Sister Disco
With your flashing trash lamps
Goodbye Sister Disco
And to your clubs and your tramps

Goodbye Sister Disco
My dancing's left you behind
Goodbye, now you're solo
Black plastic; deaf, dumb and blind

1. Maybe Sister Disco slugged him
and broke his nose, so he's going back to singing for the best garage band ever.

2. I wish you didn't say it was "the who"
all I can think about is Roger Daltrey, making it even more difficult to think about the meaning

maybe it's some kind of Dada meaning

4. no, no, no, not that
Edited on Thu Mar-10-05 01:17 AM by Kire
"Not that there's anything wrong with that", said George Costanza.

I struggled writing that sentence for quite a while. I knew I didn't write what I meant. Thanks for the chance to explain.

What I meant was, it was hard trying to decipher the meaning of the actual words when all I could think about was what do they mean to Roger Daltrey. Not what do they mean in the categorical sense.

Is that better?

5. More like Pete Townsend.
Townsend wrote most of the Who lyrics.

9. I was thinking that, later.
Maybe I'll reread the lyrics again and answer your original question.

6. Pete was drinking a lot at that time and wishing he was a punk rocker
Offhand I'd say it's about drinking a lot and wishing you're a punk rocker

8. Wisher????
He was the original punk rocker....

The Kinks and the Who paed the way for all that noise in the sevenities....

Anyway, I thinks he was pissed because he couldn't totally relate to the life style anymore.....

Hell, by that time they had stopped smashing up everything on stage and Kieth Moon had died.......

7. I believe Daltry dated "whats- her name" Summer, of the disco era, for a
while and they had a car wreck. I think this was written in response to that event....I don't know who wrote it.

and had his nose broken.

15. I always took it as Pete's attack on disco music
and recorded music in general - "black plastic" = vinyl

It is loaded with allusions to prior Who songs and implies a contrast between the gritty realism and anger of rock versus the fantasy world of disco music lyrics.

16. How about "War Pigs" by Ozzy Osbourne. That is one of my favorite war
songs. I wish they would play it on the radio more often. It's not like the 70's wish the music was more like the Vietnam era music.
