7. oh jeez no, she's only 20. Her mom knows a lot more about those days.
Although a GREAT account of the US invasion can be found in Gore Vidal's "Palimpsest." He happened to live in Guatemala at the time.
In a nutshell, the new president wanted higher wages for employees of United Fruit Co. As Vidal puts it, "he might as well have declared war on the United States."

4. Have you visited the DU Latest News thread lately?...
Edited on Fri Mar-11-05 12:51 AM by Robeson
...Today, they were talking about how the government is calling out the goons again to clear streets of protesters. I'd stay tuned, and I would be leary. I used to date a girl who was a refugee from Guatamala. Its the CIA's playground...

says she had a fine time, but my Mom's a little off, which doesn't mean it couldn't be great, just that I'm skeptical of anything my Mom says

This is a volunteer camp sweating thing she's doing, looking after injured animals. I know she can handle the hardships of sweating and camping, but

I worry. I trust her totally but not the rest of the world. oiy.

10. I'd just keep an eye on how isolated that camp is from the riots...
...in the streets, and keep an eye on the geo-political activities going on in Guatemala right now. I'm not saying she would not be safe, but as of today, things broke out in the streets of the capital, so it may be volatile.

The girl I dated was a refugee from the last genocide they had. The CIA is still a force in that country, and they are still a puppet of the USA.

12. I'm sorry,
I didn't mean to upset you. Just monitor it. Remember, the US controls that country, so the U.S. will intervene if there is a threat to American citizens. The U.S. has always practiced gunboat diplomacy in Guatemala. The Guatemalan government will shoot its own citizens, before they "piss" off Washington.
