Man who killed girlfriend's cat sentenced to six months in jail
Edited on Fri Mar-11-05 10:40 AM by LibInTexas
A man who killed and charred his ex-girlfriend's cat was given six months in jail and four years probation, with a condition he doesn't own pets during those four years.

If somebody did that to my pet, he'd better hope for more than 6 months in jail.

1. this person obviously needs treatment, no incarceration.
It's legal to eat KFC, hunters can blow the crap out of waterfowl, but this guy goes to JAIL for a cat? wtf

2. He needs treatment DURING incarceration
People who do cruel things to animals VERY OFTEN go on to do the same sorts of things to people. He does need to be incarcerated, for our safety as much as anything.

BTW: I'm a little unsettled by the way your post is worded. It seems to indicate that the suffering of the cat is unimportant.

3. small distinction
Those KFC chickens and hunted wild animals were not somebody's loving companion and friend. That guy's lucky I'm not the judge.

4. Not for the cat!
This horrid act was intended to hurt/terrorize the girlfriend. He may not deserve jail for what he did to the cat, but as for what this must have done to the girlfriend, he needs to be locked up.

Glenn Close was not trying to hurt the rabbit!

15. You're absolutely right
In the past I worked at the Justice Department, editing research reports into usable forms. In many, many cases of domestic violence, the abuser will threaten, injure, or kill a pet of the victim. Same for stalking cases -- I think in about 15 percent of stalking situations, the perp kills the victim's pet, usually in a violent and bloody manner.

5. I disagree.
Many murderers and serial killers are known to have abused and tortured animals. Hunting birds or eating commercially grown poultry is quite different than killing a domestic pet.

10. exactly
people who are cruel to animals are very often abusive or violent towards other people. It is one of the three main signs a child will turn out to be sociopathic/violent towards humans. The others are arson and bed wetting at inappropriate ages

8. I'm not a big fan of hunting, either.
But this was the act of a sickko.

Killing someone's pet is just a step below killing thier children.

7. So begins the Animal Right To Life movement
Six months in prison, though the sentence hasn't been officially handed down yet ... and four years of probation.

I'm sure we can squeeze a few prison rape gags out of this story if we try.

13. People who treat animals sadistically have MAJOR psych problems
This guy should get treatment IN jail, and be required to continue it as a condition of his probation. Ugh!

17. My compliments to the judge
I'm SICK of animal cruelty not being taken seriuosly. There are studies that show that persons who abuse animals are much more likely to abuse humans. The Humane Society has a coalition to raise awareness of this link to human abuse.
