I should get my mom to sign up for DU, just so she could post on this thread. She feels exactly the same way. Personally I've only had it on as background noise, never paid attention

I have never understood why people like that show. I personally can't stand it, and do NOT think it should win Emmys.

6. I've tried it, but don't like it
And while I don't like the Osbournes, either, I thought Patrica Heaton had some nerve complaining about their projecting a NEGATIVE image of the TV family sitcom!

Ok, I know you don't like them too, but as a fellow DUer I have more respect for your opinion than hers.

8. Raymond isn't so bad
Edited on Mon Oct-13-03 05:31 PM by khephra
It's his loveless family and ungrateful wife that ruin the show. If I was Raymond, I would have left them all years ago. The guy never really does anything seriuosly wrong, but if you'd listen to his wife it's like he's a cromag. I can only remember a few times that I've ever seen his wife when she's not being a pain in the ass to him.

32. I Don't Like It
for this very reason. Raymond and the family next door are OK, but Deborah is a shrew. I can't imagine living my life with someone like that. I'd have to kill her. And I'm a female.

My girlfriends who like the show say that the relationship between Ray and his wife is SO TRUE. Maybe this is why I'm not married. If THAT'S marriage, I want no parts of it.

34. Is "shrew" acceptable with women?
I really, really try to avoid using the term "bitch", but that's the only word that I think fits her. It took some time to come up with "pain". I like "shrew" though. That's really fitting.

36. The best part of the show ...
is not Raymond.

Like most great sitcoms, the star is not the only reason that a show is successful. Many times it is the supporting actors that make a show great. It think this is also the case with ELR.

Cheers

12. Key difference
Most people I know who like it are married - those who are not don't really seem to care.

I think it's biggest draw is in finding similarities betwene the exaggerated life of a sitcom and real life.

13. Count me among the unenlightened
'Cause I think it's great!

I always get a laugh because Raymond's life is JUST LIKE MINE (meaningless superficial differences excepted, of course). It's strangely comforting to know that I deal with it better than he does.

14. a nice, nonoffensive situation comedy . . .
with a couple of pretty funny characters (Peter Boyle, Doris Roberts) . . . but certainly not the best comedy on tv, maybe not even in the top ten . . . I watch it occasionally when I need something mind-numbing, and when there's nothing else on . . .

15. Raymond is brilliant!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It's the best comdey on television, no question.

And even if it weren't you know why I like it? Because it's not lazy like Friends, or any other sitcom.

Raymond is your classic, three-camera, long scene sitcom. People have to rehearse this--they don't just roll out of bed like those no-talent skanks on Friends, turn to the director, ask for a line, and that whole line is the entire scene!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

16. Every show is exactly the same
His wife complains about something that is wrong with their marriage or how they are raising the kids. His Mom comes over and tells his wife no so subtly that she is a bad mother and wife. His father comes over and asks for some food and yells, "Holy crap!" and sits down to watch TV. His brother comes over and complains how sucky his life is compared to Raymond's. Then they all have an epiphany and realize that Raymond is screwed up because of his parents, that his brother is even more screwed up but no one cares, and his wife stops complaining because she realizes that they already had exactly the same plot on a previous episode.

I started a similar thread some weeks ago.

Raymond is not loved by me. The show is not funny. I cannot stand the actress who plays his wife.

I do like Doris Roberts, but not in this. Ditto with Boyle.

33. Oh you've done it now Parche !
Seinfeld was light years funnier than Raymond will ever be. Michael Richards as Kramer alone was funnier than anyone on the cast of
"I can't stand Raymond".

As another poster aptly summarized, every show is the same plot line just with different circumstances. :P

"I for one will not sit idly by while a wonderful television program like Seinfeld is maligned by the un-American forces of the "Everybody
loves Raymond" contingent. <sarcasm off> :D

20. The other thing that makes it hard for me to watch it
Edited on Mon Oct-13-03 06:33 PM by khephra
Is that I've heard the actress who plays Raymond's wife talk about politics, and guess what? She a nasty, liberal-slamming Republican. Ever since I heard her talk on politics I haven't been able to see her character the same way. It now makes too much sense to me as to how she can play such a nasty wife--it's not too much of a stretch from her real personality.

and she does ads for Albertson's supermarkets out here in CA (and A&P, I think, back east). You might wanna let them know how you feel about her as a spokesperson.

I really hate them because they are so phony. They portray Heaton as a typical, overworked mom. Give me a break! She probably has an assistant who handles all of her shopping. Now that I know her politics, I hate the ads even more.

23. I don't get it either
It is just "OK" - but not the major league show it is hyped as. Not to mention all the awards - perhaps because TV sitcoms are so lame.

I thought the John Ritter show was much better - now we shall have to see about that one.

Raymond doesn't even BEGIN to compare with Scrubs or Malcolm in the Middle to name just two in the Sitcom category. But then they are not "mainstream" - too inventive for the sheeple.

26. I've been saying that for years! I don't love Raymond.
A lot of people I know love it, so I tried--I really did--but it just doesn't do it for me. I MIGHT have one or two chuckles in an episode; I might also have none. I find it more annoying than anything, and I find Ray Romano particularly annoying, wherever I see him. He doesn't seem to have any personality, his voice is whiny and annoying--he's totally unfunny.

30. Plus stupid one-dimensional TV children
TV children don't actually have personalities or needs. TV kids are a lot more stupid than real kids. TV kids never get sick. TV kids never interupt you when you're trying to have sex. TV kids just crack stupid oneliners and take naps. I hate TV kids.
