Last Star Wars 'not for children' (says George Lucas)
Moderators if you think this belongs in the lounge - please move.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/4339023.stm

The sixth and final Star Wars movie may not be suitable for young children, film-maker George Lucas has said.

He told US TV show 60 Minutes that Revenge of the Sith would be the darkest and most violent of the series.

"I don't think I would take a five or six-year-old to this," he told the CBS programme, to be aired on Sunday.

Lucas predicted the film would get a US rating advising parents some scenes may be unsuitable for under-13s. It opens in the UK and US on 19 May.

He said he expected the film would be classified PG-13 - roughly equivalent to a British 12A rating

Anyone think the wingnuts might make an issue of this?

1. Why not? They make an issue of everything else irrelevant
They care more about cartoon sea creatures than they do about the elderly, the poor or children.

3. Well that's an improvement over Episodes I &II
Which should have been labelled Unfit for Human Consumption.

10. Let's hope he found a few people who can ACT
for Episode IV. II wouldn't have been quite so horrible except for that brooding pretty boy who was so awful even the average high school theater group would have turned him down.

If any part had cried out for a real actor, that one was it.

real money. I hope this one is good.

6. The darkest and most violent of the series?
Is it too much to hope that the next installment will feature an extended scene of the torture and ritual execution of Jar-Jar Binks?

Oh wait ... the movie's titled "Revenge of the Sith" not "Passion of the Binks" ... my bad

9. LMAO!
"Passion of the Binks"!! oh man.. the possibilities!

But yeah, let's see if Lucas can redeem himself somewhat after the unforgivable last 2.

I've always looked at the originals as more 'adult oriented' or at least 'adult accessible' - he just went to 100% kiddie mode w/ the prequels so far.

I would even shell out for the "recut" version a year later.

hell, they'd love it, he's the bad guy. Now, if Skywalker came out of the closet......it could destroy Amerika as we know it.

11. Considering Anakin slaughters at least 4 Jedi in the
trailer alone, I'd say Lucas isn't kidding.. But the fact is
unless you are a hardcore SW fan you won't have any idea whats going on in this episode. You will walk away saying "no story, no characters, all special effects". You will need a decent knowledge of what happens between Episodes II & III to even have a clue to whats going on in Episode III. Basically I think Lucas figured there was no way to please the general public so he made this one to please the hardcore fans.

21. I'd say
that any film in the series that relies on arcane knowledge to be enjoyable is probably going to SUCK.

The whole point is making decent movies that are fun and entertaining. The movies drive the rest of the star wars franchise, not the other way around.

Lord knows the last two installments were pretty lame to anyone with more than three functioning brain cells.

Jar Jar fucking Binks.

17. As a big Star Wars fan, I hated--HATED--Episodes 1 and 2
But I saw the extended trailer for ROTS last night, and I shudder to say it actually looks like it will be a good movie--more like the original trilogy in terms of tone and story.

19. Hardcore too
I am glad that its PG 13.. it means that things that need to happen can happen ... There is going to be some hardcore fighting etc... don't wan't to spoil anyone.... Enough of only ship battles and the elegant lightsaber duels... we want it ALL.

Palpatine is looking pretty manipulative in the trailer...
"I need your help son" I am so vulnerable you are the only one I can turn to.. woe is me Mark my words, Ian McDiarmid is going to make this movie.

29. Another link, which seems to promote 'PG-13' more than the new movie:
http://www.cnn.com/2005/SHOWBIZ/Movies/03/11/film.starwars.reut/index.html

My response to this episode 3 hype would be:

As dark as what, a packet of "Cocoa Puffs"?

Star Wars' most darkest hour was the final battle
between Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker in Return of
the Jedi. Yet more people think the whole film of
"The Empire Strikes Back" is said to be the darkest.

Empire had the potential to be the darkest, with its
concepts, but as always the concepts were not taken as
darkly as they could because it's essentially a kid's
film.

Eps 1 and 2 were even more kids' films, featuring more
things geared to kids and leaving the adults to
cringe.

If Lucas is saying this is the darkest and may be
worthy of an R rating, why should I believe him?
Filmmakers have been stretching PG-13 as much as they
can anyway. (PG13 comingh into existence becasue of
"Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom")

The article's lecture on ratings is pointless, which
seems to BE the point of the article.

Lucas also states the obvious: "We're going to watch
him make a pact with the devil," Lucas said in his
interview with CBS correspondent Leslie Stahl. "The
film is much more dark ... more emotional. It's much
more of a tragedy." Well, DUH. This is the one where
all hell is supposed to break loose, the Jedis
exterminated and Darthie is born. WHat's it going to
be about otherwise? Smurfette deciding which Smurf to
smurf?!

Okay, I am obviously being very harsh and deliciously
sardonic. I will give the movie a chance. After all,
I love dark and well played out movies. Who knows,
maybe my criticisms are utterly unfounded. I hope so!
