3. I agree and think they should be punished severely for it.
Such a stupid, stupid song.

4. They didn't write it
It was written by Berns and Ferrell. The McCoys version was a cover for the Vibrations who first recorded the song as 'My Girl Sloopy' which I remember as an R&B minor hit. The McCoys made it famous though.

5. I agree.
May they be damned to eternal hell fire for that blight on popular music.

7. Well...
You got a thing about you
I just can't live without you
I really want you, Elenore, near me
Your looks intoxicate me
Even though your folks hate me
There's no one like you, Elenore, really

Elenore, gee I think you're swell
And you really do me well
You're my pride and joy, et cetera
Elenore, can I take the time
To ask you to speak your mind
Tell me that you love me better

I really think you're groovy
Let's go out to a movie
What do you say, now, Elenore, can we?
They'll turn the lights way down low
Maybe we won't watch the show
I think I love you, Elenore, love me

Elenore, gee I think you're swell
And you really do me well
You're my pride and joy, et cetera
Elenore, can I take the time
To ask you to speak your mind
Tell me that you love me better

Elenore, gee I think you're swell ah-hah
Elenore, gee I think you're swell ah-hah
Hah

8. You are OK.
It's a great tune. I like what Ramsey Lewis did with it.

9. When I was in the Army, one of the tanks in my battalion was called
"Sloopy Be Cool". I would love to have met the asshole who came up with THAT name.

10. And do you know who the guitar player was?
Edited on Sat Mar-12-05 11:35 AM by RetroLounge
if memory serves, it was Rick Derringer.

"Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo..."

on edit:

http://www.rickderringer.com/Biography.html

Young guitar great, vocalist and entertainer Rick Derringer was just 17 when his band "The McCoys" recorded the No.1 hit "Hang On Sloopy" in the summer of 1965, knocking "Yesterday" by The Beatles out of the top spot.

"The McCoys" had enjoyed four years of successful touring, when Rick merged his talents with Johnny Winter in 1969 forming "Johnny Winter And" ("And" referring to "The McCoys").

Rick was the only producer of all gold and platinum Winter Brothers recordings. In '71 Rick was featured on three records, "Johnny Winter And", "Johnny Winter And-Live" and "Edgar Winter's White Trash". "And" featured the first version of Derringer's "Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo" which was also released as a single, then selected again for "And - Live".

11. I like it
I know so many people that feel the same way you do about Hang On Sloopey, but I like it. I sing along whenever it plays. Heck, I even do the O-H-I-O arm motions.

Maybe it's because I grew up in Columbus, but there is something so familar about it-- a comfort food for the ears. :)

14. Yeah!! Have you ever heard the "red dress" verse?
I just recently heard this song with a verse I don't remember in there, it goes "sloopy has a red dress, yeah, that's old as the hills..."

I think of the McCoys as sort of a That Thing You Do type 60's one hit wonder group. I think of all of those types of bands with affection and wonder what they band guys are up to now.
