6. It depends on the time of day and time of year
In the morning and after meals I like very strong French Roast coffee made with Arabica beans if I can get it. When it's cold outside, I like sitting in a chair in front of the fire and reading, while I smoke a pipe and have a glass of some good Armagnac. In the summer when it's hot, I like fermented apple cider or a glass filled one third with Ricard and two-thirds with cool water (very refreshing).

28. Recently, I have started to enjoy the wonders of fine tequilas
Yeah, I know...most people hear the word "tequila" and the recoil in shock and revulsion as they recall a "bad tequila" experience they had in the past.

Too bad.

Premium Tequila is a joy to experience and most people don't understand how wonderful a really great tequila can be.

Great tequilas should be sipped and never "shot".
Great tequilas do not belong in Margaritas.
In some circles, tequila is served with limes on the side, and even a special dish of chili's that complement the drink.

Tequila is the oldest distilled spirit in the Americas.
In 1519, when the Spanish conquistadors arrived in Mexico, they found the natives drinking pulque, a fermented agave beverage with a flavor somewhat like coconut milk. The Spaniards, masters of the art of distillation, distilled the pungent brew, creating tequila, also known at that time as mezcal.

The Mexican government strictly regulates the making of tequilas, and four categories (listed in order of aging, not necessarily quality) are recognized : white (or silver or plata), joven abocado, which is silver with color and/or flavor added; reposado, aged from two months to one year, in wood tanks (not steel); and anejo, aged at least one to three years in sealed oak barrels. While aged tequilas are almost always more expensive, many aficionados prefer the silver because they taste more of the agave itself than of oak. The region of production is limited and anything produced outside the specified areas cannot be labeled tequila.

You should try a high end tequila, but be prepared to spend some money, because they don't come cheap.

El Tesoro, Chinaco Anjeo, Patron Platinum and even the 100% Agave La Reserva de la Familia de Jose Cuervo which comes individually numbered, corked, sealed with wax, and presented in a wood box.
La Reserva is incredibly smooth, dark and rich, bourbon-like, both in color and taste, from the deep-charred barrels.

Then there is the super premium Don Real 100% Agave Anjeo tequila.
At almost $450.00 a bottle, it's the top, of the top shelf tequilas.

Next time you find yourself in a good Mexican or Southwestern restaurant, go to the bar and ask the bartender what they have in the way of really good tequilas.

You may strike Gold!

Here is the holy grail...

Don Julio REAL Tequila Anejo, 100% Blue Agave, 750ml 80 Proof.
This product has been carefully produced with the best agaves selected from the REAL estate and aged in white oak barrels to obtain one of the finest tequilas produced in Mexico.

It's on sale in San Francisco's Mission Liquors for $399.00

One can only imagine how good this stuff is.

How did you know I was getting ready to post a bad experience I had with tequila? I'll spare you, after reading your illuminating post. And I think I know what I did wrong. Mine was considerably cheaper than $399!! And I drank shots!

30. I'm serious S&S...
Most people won't try a really good tequila, because they only remember the LAST tequila experience they had drinking tequila that was basically paint thinner.

No one wants to remember hugging the porcelain god doing the ol' Ralph and Earl.

The best way to try it is at a good Southwestern or Mexican restaurant.

I'm not trying to be a tequila snob or anything, and I certainly understand that a lot of people can't spend eighty bucks on a bottle of gold, so try a glass of the good stuff while dining on your favorite Mexican food.

Thanks. We have many good Mexican restaurants in California! Buying an expensive bottle like that would be impractical for me, but I should be able to swing a glass!

Just milk. I'm an addict, I think. I drink over half a gallon a day. I honestly get more of my caloric intake from milk than from food. No wonder I'm so damn skinny.

33. I make my own liqueur by steeping lemon peels in alcohol ...
Very nice added to hot apple or blueberry cider -- or sparkling cold white grape juice.

Oh, and here's some gossip for you -- apparently George W. Bush's favorite tipple, back during his Midland oil days, was a B&B (brandy and benedictine), a cocktail invented in NYC -- can you imagine him sashaying into a Texas bar and ordering one of those! The cowboys would have choked on their Budweiser!
