Poll question: Are you now or have you ever been...
Edited on Mon Oct-13-03 07:53 PM by rbnyc
...a moderator at DU?

I can see by all the stars that many of us contribute financially to DU. I'm wondering how many of us have donated our time to DU by serving as a moderator. Just curious.

:)

(I was a Lounge mod for 1 term, with ZenLefty and NY99.)

EDIT: typo. :grr:

1. Never and I don't think I would want to.
Frankly I don't think I'd be all that good at it either.

For those that do volunteer their time?:toast:

15. I despise controversy...
Put me in the "gun dungeon" or the "I/P" forum-those are polite folk, right. I really believe I'd leave DU altogether rather than be a moderator there. Life is too short.

But to those of you with the stomach:

:toast:  :smoke:

or whatever gets you through the night. You, and the managers of this board, keep me sane. Thanks. My donation is coming up in November-last years election disaster spurred me to make my origional donation so its anniversary time.

13. Every 2 months admin puts out a call for people to apply...
...and pretty much you help to enforce the rules, welcome people to the forums, answer questions, and some other duties to help the forums run smoothly. Admin explains the expectations pretty clearly.

Do the moderators work in shifts, and if so how long are they? Is it one moderator per forum?

Intrigued.

21. no, there's no set shifts...
which is why some alerts in the middle of the night go unanswered for awhile. But we do try to log on and check regularly.

I highly recommend applying for anybody who cares about this site and has some time to spare. It's an interesting job!

24. I applied a few weeks ago to be a mod,
but wasn't chosen. Since I can't really afford to donate all that much, but I spend at least an hour, and usually more, a day on DU, I figured that giving my time as a mod would be a good way to do something for DU. I think the fact that I haven't donated might have hurt me and may have been one of the reasons I wasn't chosen. I'll just keep trying, though!

because I'm on long term disability but I decided I'd donate since I planned on using a little bandwidth by posting on occasion.

On edit: I'd love to be a mod once I get credentialled and all.

Edited on Tue Oct-14-03 06:06 AM by SoCalDem
Like someone else said , lots of people volunteer and some "oldies" stay on to bridge the terms, so that all are not new at once.. 2 months goes fast...keep applying :):)

It's fun and not as controversial as some might think :)

32. I was in GD back in fall of 02
the Mid-term elections, the AR-15 invasion and the boortz invasion. There were little bits of freeper everywhere! I honestly would go away from the computer for an hour and have 50-60 freeper alerts waiting when I got back, it was nuts.

I also modded Civl Rights/Equality, JP/S, and the Meeting Room.

Cheers to all mods past, present and future, you guys do an excellent job. :-)

35. I was in the first group of moderators
I moderated the Guns, Gays, and Abortions forums (the Public Safety, Civil Rights, and Reproductive Issues forums). I got all the nutcases.

I never, ever banned anyone, though, partly because I believed (still do) that some leeway should be permitted in the issues forums that should not be tolerated in the General forums. I only deleted two posts, I think. Mostly I never banned anyone because my co-moderators were on earlier time zones, and they always got to the troublemakers first.

43. Former LBN mod here
And mind you, that was back in the day when LBN was crazier than GD, so that was no easy task. Lazarus was one of the other mods, but I forget who the third was right now.

It was quite an experience, but I don't think I'll be taking another shot at modship in the near future, unless I go insane.
