You know what I never see on DU anymore?
When I first came here and people edited a post, they always gave an explanation. You'd always see.

"Edit: spelling" or something like that.

2. It's a good practice that should be encouraged.
Perhaps new people just don't understand how it looks.

6. Why is that?
Not that I am being confrontational. I just wonder why it matters.

11. It's easy to start a flamewar with a comment . . .
. . . then go in and edit your post and claim you never said it.

12. I suppose
Although that seems like it would be a rare event.

15. These days, it is.
But I remember we had a few posters in the past who used to use it a lot. People would habitually copy their original posts to use when they "adjusted" their post later on.

13. I do it so there is no confusion about the edit.
If I edit content, I will indicate that, especially if it alters the meaning of the post.

If I'm just editing for errors or clarity, I want the person I'm addressing to know that I *didn't* change the context of the post.

4. I used to be strict about that but not anymore
If it's just a simple spelling, grammar or diction correction, I don't bother but if it changes the meaning or adds information, I do.

5. totally irritating
I don't , and never did, care why someone edits their post. In the early days, some of the tighter wound types felt it was intellectually dishonest to edit a post without explaining why.
I'm just happy if I fixed whatever was wrong with it.

9. I got really tired of it
It just seemed lame to keep saying, "Edited to add an extra comma for the sake of clarity."

These days, I figure that if the edit is within a couple of minutes of the original post, anyone who cares will be able to figure out that it just involved correcting typos or whatever.

If I do make a major change in the substance of the post, I'll say so. And if I add additional information, I'll put it at the end, prefaced by "On edit." But life is too short, and there are too many right-wing idiots out there to deal with, to sweat the small stuff.

But we do have a lot of new members. Maybe we're not setting an example? I did it, just today, when I discovered a typo, but it was too late!:grr:

on edit: p.s. I love the bears!:D

17. If I remember to I do explain my edit.
On other boards, I have to explain each and every little reason for the edit, otherwise other posters will claim that I am changing my facts or statements (when usually it is only for spelling or punctuation).

19. I do once in a while
Usually to add something.

But oftentimes I don't care. Often times I have a second thought about what I said.

I don't usually get in flamewars so it's fine.
