Typhoon - probably a local word...used around Philippines, Japan, etc

Cyclone - technically all weather systems that have a circular pattern are cyclones...many are just run of the mill systems and not full force "hurricanes," but cyclone appears to be the preferred word of the Pacific near Mexico and around Australia. I think Bangladesh calls them cyclones as well - probably a British influence. Msot of the Indian ocean countries don't deal with these powerful storms except for poor Bangladesh.

Then we just have Hurricanes and that is the way it is :)
