What's a boy to do?!? :D

Seriously. I've always been the guy saying if you can't walk in there, you don't need to be there when it comes to public hinterlands.

But I had a really, really good time dirt biking (the motorized kind) last fall, and dang it, I'm itchin' to get out there again.

Aaah! Hypocrisy!! In my own head!!! :eyes:

Maybe I can become an advocate of good division of land use, or somethin'. :P Or a biodiesel dirt bike...?

1. Why? Will dirt-biking hurt the land?
I know that mountain bikers are known for helping to maintain bike trails, keeping them free from garbage, etc.

3. Open Range Dirt Biking Is Extremely Damaging
If riding is done on dedicated set-aside land then the damage is minimized and the broader environment is spared.

Many of the large Southern California desert races were stopped because thousands of bikers would destroy the fragile ecosystem.

Like all activities of man, moderation is key.

However, man has yet to learn the lessons of "the tragedy of the commons."

2. I only enjoy the wilderness in a way that doesn't ruin it for others
Edited on Sun Mar-13-05 10:35 AM by jpgray
Something really noisy and destructive probably wouldn't meet that standard. I mean, shooting up heroin every day and maintaining a harem of gorgeous concubines is probably enjoyable, but I also wouldn't do that. :D

(edit: Depending on the area, it may be cool with me to dirt bike somewhere--just not in a location where you will ruin the natural beauty or someone else's experience.)

5. Take up mountain biking, the non-motorized kind.
That would be less bad, eh? Also hook up with a local organization that helps maintain trails and volunteer for them and that can counterbalance the problems.

6. no hypocrisy
enjoy dirt biking on lands set aside for it, or on logging roads/fire roads/power lines/etc. There's plenty of room for everyone to enjoy the outdoors in their own way.

8. You remind me of myself!
I developed a love for PWC's and had to address the fact that they are evil 2-stroke emissions demons. I was really at odds with myself until I found a 4-stroke with better emissions by Kawasaki. :D

9. I just found out Kawasaki makes a diesel bike
...of course, it's just for the military, and I can't find it anywhere. :P
