I don't like College Basketball Establishment's bias against

the small programs.

Every year, some big-time coach of a Big Time Program complains about the inclusion of small programs in the NCAA tourney. If, say, Davidson gets in (as they should), you'll see a Lute Olson or a Denny Crum whine that a Davidson or a Fairleigh Dickonson (known as "Fairly Ridiculous", by those of us in NJ) play a weak schedule, and some ACC team that went 15-16 would be a better choice.

There's some guy at the Sporting News,Mike DeCourcy, the head college basketball writer, who loves to put down the small programs, especially the Ivies.

Mind you, most of these Big Time Coaches have player graduation rates of like 20%.

6. And it's likely the committee will snub St.Joes this year
They lost to Bucknell, a pretty scrappy (and succesful team); but the committee will look for any excuse not to include St.Joes.

2. look up Tank McNamara and read the past 5 or 6 strips, for a
fun sendup of the big school (Enormous State University) turning itself inside out to get a bid

as a grad of a college with a very powerful Division II program I understand the politics; we used to watch Kentucky be the big snob and refuse to schedule Louisville or WKU during the season, then laugh ourselves silly when those two schools beat them during the tournament.

Of course we had our DIV II trophy to smile over too. But when Western Ky knocked out UK in the tournament, it was better than winning the whole tournament would have been for them.

8. when Adolph Rupp was their coach, they NEVER scheduled
Louisville or Western Ky, which has a fairly rich basketball heritage of its own.

After UK was beaten by each of these schools in NCAA tournaments, and Rupp retired, then Kentucky began to schedule in season games with Louisville. I am still not sure if they play Western.

Remember this was back in the '60s and before. I think Rupp retired around 1970, ????????

Except for UCLA, UK has the most NCAA titles in Division I
Kentucky Wesleyan has the most NCAA titles in Division II

Louisville has either two or three national titles

Western Ky went to final four of the NIT in the days before the NCAA took over as the premier tournament ..

Basketball is truly an organized religion in Kentucky.

3. Some of the BIG Time Programs have sleazy coaches
& sleazy programs.

College athletics has gotten away from "student athlete" & moved towards Prep for the Big Time.

I's a big Duke fan...Coach K runs a classy program, graduates athletes at a higher rate than just about anyone, & keeps athletics in proportion.

He recruits classy kids who learn a lot more than basketball skills.

7. Bobbie Knight graduates his kids too.
and at a substantially higher rate than the national average.

a trip to the NCAA's pays a lot of bills and stimulates alumnae donations for the school's programs at large. there is no getting around that. until the entire artifice of "student-athlete" is exposed once and for all as a sham, nothing will happen.

9. Caoch K was Bobby K's assistant coach at either IU or Army
forget which. It makes sense for both of them to have that emphasis on the student/athlete.

There are still a few schools left with the true student ethic
Vanderbilt comes to mind..
