Poll question: Is Google's gmail racist?
Does it's invite-only system draw lines of who does and who does not get to take advantage of this service along the lines of an already segregated society?

3. I'm actually kind-of serious about this.

6. Orkut (an online community and also made by Google) has invites, and
most people there are Brazilian (not white).

7. That actually makes my argument for me.
It's not really that it favors whites necessarily, but that it's distribution could be affected by segregation.

8. I Have Wondered Why gmail Is Invite-Only
and decided that Google wanted to ensure that only 'real' people got accounts - not spammers who would use them as shell accounts. The point may become moot anyway...heard that Google is going to drop the invite-only policy for new accounts as they end their beta phase.

If you want one, PM me with a first and last name and the email address you want the invite sent to.

I don't know if it is racist, but it certainly seems sexist. I have it forward my mail to my yahoo account because gmail won't let me filter out the porn spam.

14. Computer access is somewhat determined by socioeconomic status
so I can kinda see your point; the *effect* may be racist, but I wouldn't say it actually is.

Besides, anyone can walk into a public library and use a computer on a regular basis these days; once you set up a free email account somewhere, how long will it be before you're in contact with a gmail account holder? I really think almost anyone could get a gmail account if they tried.
