I'm gonna have a ton of sunflowers this year...some sunflowers sprouted from birdseed I threw out last year and I got all the seeds...I have a bunch of lantana on the windowsill as well as a couple of volunteer silk trees that are going into the ground, a ton of echinacea seed too. Of course we will have every kind of tomato imaginable, and maybe some corn too.

I'd like to try some other vegetables, anyone got any suggestions for stuff that isn't that hard to grow (I'm a beginning gardener).

4. great suggestion, zuchini lasagna is my favorite.
my parent's grow alot of squash but I can't think of a use for it. My mother was on that cabbage soup diet for about 3 years (months, but it seemed alot longer) and she put the squash in that. But I don't like fried squash.

I think you can make babbaganoush with zuchinni, no?

5. I've never made it
So I'm not sure.

I was being rather flip when I suggested zuchinni. Growing a zuchinni plant usually means you leave a bag or fifteen of zuchinnis on the porch of everyone you know.

It is prolific, to say the least.

Personally, if you're wanting to start from seed, a squash like zuchinni would be the easiest. Tomatoes and lettuce can be a bit finicky from seed (unless you're direct seeding) but if you're just going to buy some plant starts, you'll probably be fine.

Beans were a good suggestion as well. Making a teepee from some poles (I use bamboo) so the beans can grow is pretty cool and it looks good in the garden.

3. grow beans!
they are fool proof! an old farmer once told me, 'if you want to feel like you know how to grow something, grow beans.'

i started my lettuce and tomatoes yesterday inside. in a month, i'll start cukes and winter squash. the rest i'll plant directly outside, then i'll do a late planting so we have fresh vegetables in the fall.

i have the sunflower problem, too! i keep picking the sprouts out, but they tend to take over the garden.

6. blue flax and cosmos and morning glory.

Maybe some daisies. Maybe petunias and another fragrant flower in pots. Unfortunately, I rent, or else I'd be planting a lot more.

I think you can't go wrong with baby tomatoes. They're yummy right off the vine.

7. I ordered some of those "Instant Flowers" off of QVC tonight.
They're mats with seeds and fertilizer that you just roll out on the ground and water.

Anybody ever try these before? I got the Victorian collection: Zinnias, snapdragons, babies breath, cosmos, etc. I hope they are nice.

I'm itchin' to get started! Meanwhile, it was snowing this morning here again. Gack!
