Back from Job Interview
I went to the interview--it was in Broward County. It turned out to be in a place called "Workforce One", where people involved in welfare to work were coming in and out. It looked like a government office. There was a TV touting "Florida Kid Care", the state's version of CHIP for low income children.

Anyway the man interviewed me, described the company to me. It is an outside sales position, where I would be selling people insurance. There would be training and then I would start.

They would do a background check on me. After the interivew I had to take an IQ test. Then the man said he would call me tonight to schedule a second interview.

I don't know what to think. The job seems interesting. I will find out if I am going to go a second interview. The fact that it was in a "welfare to work interview" makes me wonder what is really going on.

Any thoughts?

One question: How extensive are background checks? What information do they actually find?

2. Be careful...
Of any outside sales positions. Many times they are scams, where they count on a high turnover of people so they don't have to insure, register, or pay (shit you not...) the workers. I imagine Florida is just like CA (where I encountered many of those same type of jobs)...

If you are collecting unemployment right now and are looking for job training, check with your employment office, ask them if there are any training schools that meet with the requirements (in CA, it was if the course was under a year, and gave job placement services, basically.) I went to advertising/graphic design school and later on, machinist training.

Even if you are not collecting unemployment, still look into it. If I were you, I would not take any job that will make you go "Cold Calling", which is where you have to just walk up to people, offices or whatever and try to sell them something.

Hunny, sorry this is so long, but I have been through just about every avenue for job searching...I could tell you some stories!!

So, don't take that job, unless you know it's legit!! Let me know how you are doing!!
XXXOOO

4. Yeah I have my doubts
So I am going to go on the second interview to find out more. I will then have a better idea.

But so far I do have concerns.

3. Gosh that's weird

Did he give any info at all about what insurance company(ies) you'd be working with? My first 8 reactions are that it sounds like a hustle. I'd recommend calling the BBB and asking if they have any complaints against the welfare-to-work firm that interviewed you. It might be totally on the up and up, but it wouldn't hurt to have all the information you can get.

Edit: I love being able to edit subject lines!

5. Iti s a credible insurance company
The company is around 100 years old. So it does seem legit.

It was just weird that it was at a "welfare to work" office.

13. Suggestions
Here's wht I'd do. Do a search on the net for info on the company. Also type in the name of the company and the word "scam" and see if anything comes up. Also call the Chamber of Commerce and the Better Business Bureau and see if they have any complaints or info on the company. Good luck!

8. Are they giving you the leads?
My father-in-law got into this. It was OK for awhile, but now they've left him high and dry with no leads.

9. I wouldn't worry too much
about the background checks. Unless its a high paying job, most employers I dealt with through the Job Service did a very perfunctary check, if any at all.

10. I am not worried
As Ih ave no criminal record it shouldn't be a problem. I am just wondering how in depth is and what information they find.

11. Are you talking about health insurance?
If it's life insurance it sounds shady. Folks that are having trouble feeding their families shouldn't be pressured to buy life insurance. My first ex-husband sold life insurance and on the 3rd of each month went to collect the old folks' premiums before they spent their SS checks on food. This was informal policy.

16. Run..don't walk...
accident/disability insurance is offered by EVERYONE..even credit card companies & department stores..

I am sure that you can do much better with your education.. and people have no "extra" money for superfluous insurance,,,You can surely find something different to do..

Apply at lots of places..in person , if possible and schmooze..

Hell..be a bartender, it will fill your evenings and you'll get to meet young people like yourselves..

There are cruise lines galore, apply with them, and get to travel in the bargain :)
