Mother Kept Mummified Daughter for Aliens
"ALMATY (Reuters) - A distraught Kazakh mother kept her daughter's mummified corpse in her apartment for three years hoping she would be resurrected by aliens, police said on Thursday."

Police spokeswoman Nina Tsys told Reuters by telephone from the town of Pavlodar in northern Kazakhstan that Olga, 27, was believed to have died from an autoimmune disorder after her mother failed -- or declined -- to call for medical help.

-snip-

"Tsys said the mother appeared to have been influenced by a sect preaching "cosmology" that promised resurrection of her child with the help of a "third cosmic eye" or by aliens."

1. had that happened in America,
I would have said to lock said woman up in a psych ward. I don't have much tolerance for cultists. She didn't kill her kid, but she didn't try to save her, either.

But, in a former Soviet Union republic, that's not too far from the norm. There's a deep history there of joining aliens/launching into space upon death. I don't think this occurrence is _that_ out of the ordinary. And as crappy as medical care is, she may have been not to wrong in thinking the docs couldn't help.

2. Huh?
"There's a deep history there of joining aliens/launching into space upon death."

Can you elaborate on that? I'd never heard of that phenomenon and it sounds interesting.
