Poll question: Best movie that was deemed a "flop"
As for me it's Heavens Gate. IMHO this was a masterpiece, and American audiences didn't *get* it in light of Star Wars-esque movies that were coming out at the time

If that doesn't qualify, my vote for The Postman

22. It was a flop, probably due to bad timing.
IIRC it was released right after 9/11.

Nice choice!

4. Wonder Boys
It was such a flop the first time, they re-released it before the Oscars hoping it would catch on. It didn't, and flopped at the box office twice, although it is one of my favorite movies of the last 5 years.

10. Same here!
And making an entertaining movie about WRITING, especially WRITER'S BLOCK is as hard as it gets.

38. I didn't know that was considered a flop. I loved it.
I just thought it was meant to be a niche market/artsy type movie not really intended for wide distribution.

Kane was panned by a lot of critics and didn't do very well at the box office.

I was surprised it wasn't one of the choices on the list.

On edit: "Despite all the publicity, the film was a box office flop and was quickly consigned to the RKO vaults. At 1941's Academy Awards the film was booed every time one of its nine nominations was announced." (From imdb.com)

This is one of the reasons Welles was run out of Hollywood and ended up a drunk.

Especially during the car chase down the LA canals

One of the most severly unfairly maligned films of all time. Even Terry Gilliam thinks he went overboard on it; I disagree. I think it was brilliant

quality. I thought it was an OK film, but people acted like it was to film like Pauli Shore was to comedy (and film), but I enjoyed it.

Waterworld, on the other hand, did stink as bad as reported.

16. Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me
Another unfairly maligned film, which I think was a fantastic movie, superb prequel to the Twin Peaks series, that was allowed to go places the series could not.

Brilliant, utterly. The nightclub scene was just amazing because of the audio and the subtitling.

20. Burton/Taylor was supposed to be a flop that ruined 20th Century
But it go nominated for Best Picture and Rex Harrison and Roddy McDowel got acting nomination for lead and supporting. It won for Cinematography, Color and Visual Effects. I enjoy watching it and Taylor and Burton, meeting all expectations, do their usual incredible jobs. It's not Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolf? but few things are.

21. Ralph Bakshi's "Lord of the Rings"
This is my last one, I promise!

While not *actually* a flop, history has judged it a flop because it wasn't as hugely popular as was expected. It has been the target of more unfair criticism that probably any film ever made. Bakshi is, was and always will be a visionary, and he showed it most fantastically, IMO, in this film.

A shame that history will regard the Jackson travesty as the "definitive" movie version of LotR

Here's a draft cover from my dream fan produced special edition of LotR...

In the last scene where the mom goes to sleep and *dies*, are we to assume David dies as well?

27. "Ishtar" was hilarious.
An all-time great film? No.

Still, most of the bile spewn toward it can only be accountable to people expecting something more "serious" from Beatty and Hoffman than screwball comedy.

34. "Ragtime" was quite a good film,
with an excellent performance by Howard Rollins and the "comeback" of James Cagney.

But it cost too much and didn't make back its costs. So it was a flop.
