Cabbie Ordered to Stop Wearing Elvis Garb

Cabbie Ordered to Stop Wearing Elvis Garb

SEATTLE -- Elvis has not entirely left the cab stand. Cabbie Dave Groh last week lost his appeal of a $60 fine for violating the dress-code for taxi drivers, but says he's determined to continue his lighthearted salute to the King from behind the wheel.

Groh bought three Elvis costumes and he started reading up on his alter ego, the better to answer questions. He makes a lot more in tips than he ever did as an ordinary cabbie.

But the costume violated the city's cabdriver uniform policy.

"cabdriver uniform policy"? I had no idea.

3. Okay---I live in Seattle
and have taken many cabs to and from the airport, to and from job interviews, etc....and I have *NEVER* seen a cabbie in a uniform.

Unless, of course, a uniform consists of a T-Shirt and Jeans/Shorts.

There is no UNIFORM.....

That being said, this Cab Elvis does his own business where people can get married in his cab. He advertises in alterna-papers out here. I really don't see what the harm is, again, considering that NO OTHER CABBIES WEAR A UNIFORM.

Shit--I'd rather see them all in elvis costumes than the rag-tag shit they wear now.

4. I could see if there was a health issue or something
I would support the suggestion of hygienge to cabbies. I wonder what inspired the reg? What is the upside to having homogeneous cabbies?

How could he lose this? It effects his income.

5. the thing is,
that there is no homogeneous "uniform" for the cabbies that I've seen. They're in their 'day clothes'--shirt and pants. It's not like they're all wearing the same outfit or anything.

Cab Elvis is also an ordained minister, that's why he can perform marriage ceremonies in his cab. He says the outfit is his religious...whatever...garb...

I really don't see the problem with this----in any way, shape, or form.

I'd think it'd be a BOOST for tourism, you know--how cool would it be to get CAB ELVIS as your cabbie when you're hopping to Sea-Tac?

I mean, Seattle has RIDE THE DUCK tours which is this big boat with wheels that rides down the street, blaring music, and everyone has a duck-mouth shaped Kazoo, and the driver instructs them to kazoo as loudly and as long as possible when they get to stop-lights and such. This thing is a TOTAL nuissance. It goes 2 mph and takes up an entire lane PLUS some---I find that to be more "against code" than CabElvis
