Fenris' Needlessly Complicated Rock Quiz: Vol. 1: The 60s

Okay, so about half of these questions are needlessly complicated. The other half are actually possible for anyone to answer. This is my first installment, and it deals with the mid-to-late 1960s rock scene. If it seems odd that I left out certain important figures (i.e. the Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix) it is because this may or may not be a multi-part quiz, depending on the number of posts I get. And fear not. Some bands transcend the 60s, and therefore shall be fair game for a 70s quiz.

And I compiled and composed all of these questions myself, but I have books and LPs to back me up.

1) Name both musicians who qualify for the dubious title of the "fifth" Beatle.

2) Who was the only member of the Beach Boys that surfed?

3) Who played lead guitar on both the Who's "I Can't Explain" and Donovan's "Hurdy Gurdy Man?" BONUS: Explain why the session for the latter was signifigant to the history of another, bigger musical act.

4) Which folk artist wrote the song "Red Rubber Ball" before making it big? What was the name of the band that performed that song?

5) Which song by the Byrds convinced Bob Dylan they were more than just a band of imitators (Hint: He wrote it)?

6) Skip Spence was a member of the Jefferson Airplane but left to work in a different band. What was the name of that band?

7) What was the name of Bob Dylan's backing band after he went electric (their name before their more common moniker)? Who did they become?

If that's the criteria, that they had to have actually been part of the band. Voorman and Preston both got that name partly because they played on all the individual members' solo albums, and they'd both played at one time or another on various Beatles songs, but Stu and Pete were actually part of the band.

I was being a bit silly with my Murray the 'K'...

Weren't they Ronnie Hawkins' backing band before they joined Dylan?

Actually, they went solo first as Levon And The Hawks, then they hooked up with Dylan.

There is a legit answer for this question.

I do know he quit the Hawks halfway through their supporting Dylan in England because the folkies were harassing them all the time.

Levon resented the intrusion of this upstart folk musician into his band and spent all of his time in Arkansas while the Hawks recorded and toured with Dylan. He only reemerged on 1969's "Isle of White" record on drums and various other locations during Dyaln's collaboration with the Band.

I also had Pete Best, Billy Preston, Tony Sheridan and Stu Sutcliffe...

I remember Moby Grape....but forgot he was in it.

but I have a shrewd notion that's not who you meant. Brian Epstein was also the 5th Beatle and of course Sutcliffe. Best was one of the four, replaced by Ringo, so he can't be the fifth one. The correct answer would thus be George Martin and Stu Sutcliffe, but I don't know if these are the ones you were looking for.

I was going to say George Martin and Brian Epstein, but you said "musicians." So, how about Stu Sutcliffe and Pete Best?

Carl Wilson. Or was it Dennis? Damn, I can't remember now! (Of course, if it *was* Dennis, that would be quite ironic, considering that he died of drowning!)

Jimmy Page, later of Led Zeppelin fame.

Paul Simon and Bruce Woolley (of the Seekers) co-wrote "Red Rubber Ball." The Cyrkle had a hit with it in 1966.

The Hawks, who later changed their name to The Band. By the way, the Hawks/Band got their start in the late '50s backing up rockabilly singer Ronnie Hawkins.

1) Stu Sutcliffe (quit the band) and Pete Best (was fired). Although if you said Murray the K, George Martin, Klaus Voorman, Billy Preston, or Tony Sheridan, those answers, while not exactly what I was looking for, are correct.

3) Jimmy Page. He met his future bandmate John Paul Jones at the "Hurdy Gurdy" sessions and played with him for the first time on that track.

5) Let's hear from Jim McGuinn: "It was 'Lay Down Your Weary Tune' that finally convinced Dylan that we were really something. I was at this apartment in New Yorkand Dylan came up to me and said: 'Up until I heard this I thought you were just another imitator...but this has got real feeling to it.'" The song appears on the album "Turn, Turn Turn!"

He had a solo album that was really great.

Have you read "Unknown Legend of Rock and Roll"?

:shrug: Fill me in.

It comes with a CD and covers people from the early fifties to the early 80's that are virtually unkown but had a huge influence in music.

For example "The Creation" had a guitarist that was the first guy to use a violin bow in a show. Jimmy Page made great use of that.

"The Misunderstood" used a lot of lights and stuff in their show that Pink Floyd later used. They were a blues based psychodelic band that had a petal stell in the band.

I had never heard of "The Cleaners form Venus" before.

It covers a lot of well known burnouts like Spence, Syd Barrett, Nick Drake and others.

Its just a pretty cool book.

Hmmm -- skipped # 8 I think my 6 and 7 should be 7 and 8, and 6 I would have left blank (if that's the one where the answer is Electric Grape.)

Pretty hard, couldn't remember who did "Red Rubber Ball" though it will now bounce around in my brain for days!

Complaints: No early 60s music, and I could swear "Big Pink" came out in the early seventies.
