I'm not Irish. Not even a little bit. We've even researched it. Nope, no Irish. A lot of English blood, a TON of Welsh blood, a drop or two of Scot, French, and then the Native American and Mexican blood we got over the generations since we got to this country.

But Irish? Not a bit. Got nothing against them, they have a lovely country. I'm just not one.

And I hate the idea that I have to wear a certain color or be pinched. And green beer just sucks.

So there.

Why don't Italians have a day?

Oh wait, they never will because they pulled troops out of Iraq. :)

10. I'm part Irish and I hate St. Paddy's day
I call it Amateur Drunk Day. I also have some antipathy toward the parochialism and cronyism displayed by the Boson Irish of my youth. They have changed over the generations, but I hated their superior attitude when I was young.

25. I have to say, I do know what you mean.
Having worked on Washington Street for a year, when it was ticky tacky central.

On the other hand, I used to hang out with a band in Dorchester in the early 1980s, and sometimes with that part of the city's angry graffiti shouting, "BRITS OUT OF IRELAND!" it felt like Ulster a bit sometimes (I imagine). And I mean that in a good way (somehow).

13. We get none of that over here
The only celebration of St. Patrick's day is a sharp rise in the consumption of guiness.

But then St. George doesn't get much of a look in either, each year there are calls for St. George's Day to be made a public holiday (yays), but I'm usually the only person I see wearing the traditional red rose.

i hate the pinch-if-not-wearing-green thing too.

i can take or leave green beer, but i do like corned beef and cabbage, or even better - a reuben sandwich. Guinness stew is pretty tasty too.

so there are a few perks today :)

24. St Patrick's day is celebrated in the North.
St Patrick's Day is being celebrated in colourful style with parades across Northern Ireland. Three parades converged in Belfast city centre at a free open air concert compered by Coronation Street and Boyzone star Keith Duffy.....

The largest cross-community carnival is being held in Downpatrick.

Up to 1,500 people were taking part in the parade which featured dancers, steel and pipe bands.

Traditional ceili bands were performing at venues across Londonderry as the city celebrated with its largest parade in 10 years.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/northern_ireland/4355063.stm

In a connected story the Belfast City Council has refused funding since they do not regard the parades as sufficiently "all-inclusive." (See dangerous sectarians below.)

Since you're a visitor, wearing neutral colors is probably smart. You might not know what neighborhoods to avoid.

39. What's this about being pinched for not wearing green on
Paddy's Day?

Is this some sort of East Coast or Texas thing?

It's never happened to me in Chicago and many years on the 17th of March I've not worn anything green.

But then again, I'm like 99% Irish and I guess it shows on my face or something.

Can someone enlighten me?
