Grad School Application Limbo ***UPDATE***
Ok - I called the school and spoke to a really nice Admissions person. She said they usually use 2 or 3 people from the list as it's a small program and most people who are accepted enroll. They have know way of knowing when my status could change - maybe even August AARGG!!!. They also can't tell me where I am on the list and, as the program is a year long one I would have to reapply for Fall 2006 if I don't get taken. OK - that's the situation. Well I said "Can I come in for an interview and try and put a face to the name?" The woman said "Huh. That's a really good idea. I would recommend that. Let me give you the department chair's Assistant's number." "Great, thank you very much"

So I call this woman, not knowing what I'm doing and she's really nice and says "Marshall has an appointment free next Friday will that work?" It then occurs to me that I'd be meeting the head of the entire Illustration program - Marshall Arisman!!! If you've read magazines in the last 20 years you know who Marshall Arisman is. I almost faint but keep it together enough to be very charming and calm. She was wonderful and the episode was very encouraging.

All this being said I'm all rumbly in my stomach and on edge. As a friend of mine so kindly pointed out, however, I'm on the wait-list of one of the most prestigious art schools in the country - I am very happy with that. Trying to stay upbeat here.

I need your, vibes, energy, prayers, whatever - I REALLY want this.

That is all for now.

4. Peace and Good Vibes to you
Congratulations! Most people never take the steps you've taken to pursue a dream. It seems things are flowing smoothly for you, and doors are being opened. Take that opportunity and run with it. Use the time you have before the interview to rehearse what you want to talk about; writing down an agenda is helpful for you and the person you're meeting with. Confidence is the key. And, they're looking for more than academics or talent--are you a "fit" for the school? So, personality and confidence, good manners and things like that. And, pay attention to your shoes. No kidding. They don't have to be expensive, but they should be polished/clean, etc.

Good luck!!!

Peace,

RV

5. Best of luck
Waiting is almost worse than rejection.

I'd certainly take meeting the top guy as a good sign, just remember to keep a level head (or as level as possible), and to stay calm (again as calm as possible). He's just a human after all.

Edited on Thu Mar-17-05 12:06 PM by izzybeans
graduate school. I realize now of course that these people are just human and my fears of them were unwarranted. You might even discover him to be less impressive than the name attached to his work. Even if this guy turns out to be a pretentious prick if you stand there as you are and display what you're capable of you will be a lock. If not this year than next. All that matters is getting in the door. If you are on a waiting list then probably the only thing missing from your application is a face.

Good Luck!

I'll do the academic gatekeeper dance so that the 'gods' in the hall postmark the admission letter your way.:D

Honestly? I think this will do it. Once I read your post, I pictured you getting in. You'll just go in there and be the guy we all love and respect (ok, those of us with good taste anyway) and ole Marshall will see what an asset you will be to his program. You'll be shoo-in.

You will be in my prayers. Please keep us updated!!

you've come so far. don't forget where you were a few years ago when you wouldn't even let yourself entertain the idea of appyling to grad school. you've worked so hard and you deserve all the joys that manifest when you throw yourself out there to pursue your art.

i got your back. always.

if you are as charming, smart, graphically astute, and sweet as you are here, C, I suspect he will be very impressed. Way to be assertive!
Sometimes it's not a good idea to wait for your dreams to come to you!
You need to go out there and corral them, so to speak. :)
