Am I the only old-timer here who has no problem with recent rules?
Those of you who have read my posts know that I hold some opinions which most would consider pretty extreme, and I'm not shy about expressing them. And yet, I don't have many threads locked or posts deleted -- not more than I did 2 or 3 years ago, at least.

What's the deal? Is it that I don't hang around the Lounge a lot? Is it that I completely agree with the rule "don't call somebody a troll, hit alert" (a mere extension of 'only a jury can pronounce a person guilty'), unless that 'somebody' is an obvious troll by any possible standard?

1. I have no problem with the rules - I'm a guest here and agreed to abide

by them when I entered.

Just like when I visit someone's house where the rule is take your shoes off at the doorway, I take my shoes off. It's their house.

3. That goes without saying --
-- but also, I don't feel that the rules impact my freedom of expression here. I'm not too crazy about "no sex threads" and such rules, but if I want to discuss sex, there are better places than DU.

10. I agree completely. The rules don't affect my freedom of expression,
as a matter of fact, there are very few places where I can get away with saying or writing the word "fuck", and this is one of them.

I never participate in "sex threads" anyway - and if I cared enough I'd go elsewhere, but I don't. I'm married.

21. Per my comment later about size of community
I get what KG means, and don't take offense even though he would consider some of my positions slightly enabling of the "fascist state" (eg I am liberal but not quite radical) - but I know that he appreciates where I am and what I say regardless.... that has more to do with having had many exchanges when this was a much smaller place. I still love the place, appreciate the need for the rules (in part due to the otherwise loud and ongoing disruption - sonme coming from a faked left position - to pretent to be liberal), but recognize that it is harder to "read" other posters when it is as large as it is today.

5. Long timer responding
to what new rule are you referring (the troll/freeper/calling out thing has been an issue for my entire posting time at DU - also three years.) Is there something recent that I missed?

Trumad's goodbye thread is an example: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=105x2836001 but I've seen many people grumble.

13. The link to Trumad's goodbye thread doesn't work.
And I never saw it.

But I personally found Trumad to be pretty obnoxious.

15. Sorry, I fixed it.
Can't put a coma at the end of a URL, it thinks it's a part of the URL.

18. The link must be corrected,
it worked for me... his point about the size of the community is to the point. His style (more sarcastic and confrontational) was completely opposite of mine - however over the years - we came to understand and appreciate each other. Gaining a sense of where his "in your face-ness" came from - gave me a sense of perspective... and context from which to read his posts. Often a subtle point underlied the thread that was quite on the mark. Easier to see/read/understand/appreciate when it was a smaller community (and thus one had more frequent interactions with one another.)

6. I think interpretation of the rules is dependent on
the mods, and they change frequently. honestly, I've never seen anything like a personal attack from you. Your posts are usually informative.

19. Nope. no problem with the rules.
This site belongs to Skinner, EarlG and eLad. They just let me use it. How lucky can a guy get?

I think in all the time I've been here, I've had one reply deleted, and I've never received a warning from a Mod or an Admin. I love it here. I want to keep it a place that I love to visit.

20. This board is well run and well moderated..
... and I say that as someone who had a post deleted just today :)

I knew it would but I had something to say. I don't make a habit of it.

There are few tightropes tighter than having a board like this where people can pretty much speak their mind but there are limits. There have to be or it would devolve into a shitstorm in a hurry, I've seen it happen over and over again.

Kudos to the DUers :)

22. I'm a mid-timer who thinks even rebels need rules
that other dude who left was contradictory. DU is awesome, its that way because of the rules.

I mean, cant we all get along?

Bad on my part, I guess. I recently had two threads locked and I personally didn't think either of them were "calling out" another DUer. But since this Democratic Underground is an oligarchy--is that ironic?--I don't have a say. When I signed up, I signed up knowing I didn't have a say as to how the rules are enforced.

As more and more people join DU, the rules will probably become more stringent. I guess that's the way it has to be.
