why don't they say "he rose" or "he was raised" ?

I don't say "so & so is risen from bed this morning"

Just curious :shrug:

Actually, it's an actual quote from the gospels, so the tense is probably reflective of the actual tense used in the Greek/aramaic (not remembering which part was written in what, I can't say more).

However, just from the point of view of grammar, "he is risen" is an archaic way of saying "he has risen," and the "have+verb" form, referred to as the present perfect, means that an action occurred and the results are still in effect.

It's a matter of unconscious emphasis.

The expression "He is risen" was popularized in two ways, being used in well-known Easter hymns, and being used as an Easter greeting in some areas.

By the way, the difference between, say, "I ate breakfast" and "I have eaten breakfast" is a point of English grammar that drives Japanese people crazy.

17. That's because "eat" is a transitive verb

(can take a direct object, i.e. you never just "eat," in reality, you always eat something), and "rise" is an intransitive verb (the subject does something but there is no direct effect on an object implied). These two classes of verbs are governed by different rules.

Besides, "is risen" is an older form of "has risen," and you WOULD say "has eaten."

using "to be" as the auxiliary verb. It is similar to French in which a small set of verbs use "être" (to be) as the auxiliary, and all the rest use "avoir."
