Lawmaker Wants To Ban Erectile Dysfunction Ads On Primetime TV
<snip>

U.S. Rep. Jim Moran said he is fed up with the barrage of Viagra and other erectile dysfunction ads on prime-time TV.

The Virginia Democrat Thursday introduced legislation to limit the ads on television and radio to late-night hours.

Moran said, "You can hardly watch prime-time television or a major sporting event with your family without ads warning of the dangers of a 'four-hour experience' airing every 10 minutes."

He said there is just too much sexual innuendo.

He said he had no problem when Bob Dole was doing the commercials. But now Moran said the ads have gone too far.

His bill would require that such ads run only between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., similar to the rules followed voluntarily by the liquor industry.

Moran said it's appropriate for Congress to crack down on these ads because Medicare will next year extend coverage to erectile dysfunction medication, meaning that taxpayers will essentially be subsidizing the commercials.

3. I think they should ban all feminine hygiene ads also
and all drug ads that don't tell what the drug does for you.

23. damn straight
I am sick of watching TV during dinner and seeing ads for femine hygiene, hemmorhoid creams, penis enlargement pills etc.

If you need these things, you don't need to see them on TV

Prescription Drug ads are the worst--because your doctor should be the one telling you about them, not the other way around. And they drive up the cost of our prescriptions

4. What about Bob?
He's getting a big lift from his ads, riding high and proud on his big advancements. Now he'll shrivel to a lackluster man, no longer feeling large in the office or the golf course.

It'll be hard.

6. God bless Jim Moran
I'm so tired of these ads I never want to see a hard one again! Really you've got to wonder how much profit these drugs are generating, while people die in Africa from the lack of AIDS drugs.

Jim used to be my Congressman. I moved out of his area. I really like this crusty Irishman. As I recall he slugged some Republican over changing the airport in his jurisdiction from National Airport to Reagan National Airport.

Jim Moran will always be my favorite Congressman.

11. Those cost of those ads are included in "R&D expenses"
as are portions of executive's pay. When some yahoo is on the box crying about how half of new drug costs are Research and Development remember that.

Also about 70% of the actual research is done by NIH as well as other government entities (your money) and the drug companies are allowed to include some of those costs (which they never paid) into R&D.

16. He was wrong in that there are Jews on both sides of this issue
but Israel has a stake in all that we're doing in Iraq and I think that's what he meant.

10. I'd ban those anti-herpes drug ads
The ones that claim that they eliminate outward visual indications of herpes but do not stop transmission of herpes.

13. Good idea
While we're at it, let's ban ads for ALL prescription drugs. Pharmacoms took a wrong turn when those ads became legal, spending all their $$$ on advertising instead of testing the verdammt things.

24. Ding! Ding! Ding! Ding! We Have A Winner
Advertise in the trade journals directly to doctors and pharamcists. That's it. Direct to consumer advertising is inappropriate in prescription drugs.

15. I'll have to agree with this.
I'd have to go with others and also extend it to all pharmaceuticals, and feminine hygiene products.

Some of these just conjure the wrong images at the wrong time. I could really give a shit less if Jim live livin' large and laughing easy", or jeebus i could be spared from all the mentions of "heavy flow days". Not to mention pharm ads where they throw out an ass load of symptoms and try to get you to go to your doctor and get this medication.

19. I also agree
It's not like any human on the planet doesn't know these drugs exist.
They can go ask the doc for a RX. I'm tired of seeing the darked haired woman talking about how her man needs Levitra.
