VCR help
Why do they seem to be phasing vcr's out now? How do DU'ers record things to watch later? Is it Tivo? Or what? I've had a rough experience this week trying to replace my vcr and I'll admit I am not "up" on the technology.

1. VCR's are as good as dead
The new thing here is digital receivers with hard drives
and a dvd burner if you want to keep something long term.
Pretty cool technology really.

3. Do you mean
DVD recorders or tv tuner cards for computers? Have you ever tried a tv tuner card on a computer or do you know someone who has?

6. I am not aware how popular TV tuner cards are
I was talking about a unit that is just like a VCR,
only it's digital and the main recording device is
an 80 gig hard drive. The hard drive is incorporated in the unit
along with the burner.
How's that?

7. Thanks.
How many 60 minute programs can you fit on the 80 gig hard drive?

8. I haven't got the info with me right now
but in standard definition I think it would be quite a few.
Maybe forty, but I'll have to get back to you on that.
It's probably on the net somewhere.

9. Thanks.
I'll go try to find it. I guess it makes sense, but what if you want to record something to keep? Like a special report or something? I guess they don't want you to keep what you record. That sounds like the plan.

2. Either TiVo or DVD recorders..................
are becoming the gold standard now in home recording. I don't like either.

4. Is Tivo subscription based?
Or is it a one time buy the thing and use it at will?

13. Tivo is both
you can spend a hundred bucks or so on a unit and pay 12 bucks a month, or you can pay 350 bucks and "own" the unit so there are no monthly fees.

I don't have a Tivo, but my coworkers swear by them...

Comcast and some other cable companies offer a digital video recorder (same as Tivo really) as part of their digital cable packages... costs about $10 a month more than digital cable. I don't know who your cable company is, but you can look into it with them if you have digital cable.

14. depends upon the unit
Toshiba makes one with a 120 gig hard drive and a DVD burner that has Tivo standard included (standard has the 3 day programming menus). The subscription has programming menus available for up to 14 days.

5. Well, VHS VCRs were outdated when they first came on the market
So no real surprise there.

With the whole new ideas about copy protection / rights management, the industry has an interest in getting rid of all analog recorders ASAP. It will be interesting to see how it develops, once (if at all) HDTV takes over.

The nearest "new" thing to old VHS (ignoring S-VHS) is Digital VHS. The cassettes look the same, but they are used to store the data digitally. At the moment there is no system with a better quality/recording length.

The big sellers are TiVos and DVD Recorders, though.

11. VHS is going away.
The industry is phasing it out.
However, you can STILL buy new machines, but you'll have to disquise yourself and sneak into Wally-World to find one.

My advice? Get one of those VHS-DVD burner decks and start converting your collection.

Look to JVC or Panasonic. Thery're the only companies still producing higher-end VHS gear.

12. I've had a difficult time
finding 8 tracks too. (Tongue in cheek!)

Time marches on and so does technology. The only "scheme" is to obsolete the old to create a new market. Besides that, you don't need to "rewind" DVDs.
