Did anyone watch the "The Contender" last week?
I couldn't watch it at the time ...so I taped it. I stayed home sick today so I finally got to watch it.

I have to say I enjoyed it! Some parts I didn't care for..like taking all these guys shopping. I just fast forwarded through it... I did like the way they showed more of the individuals families.

I can't say I am a big boxing fan.... ever since Tyson bit off Holyfield's ear... I kinda lost my enthusiasm with the sport.

One of the odd things I observed in last weeks episode... it was moments before the fight between Ishe Smith and Ahmed (I don't recall his last name). Ishe and his wife were praying to God asking him for fists of steel....do they really believe that God is going to protect him? That he would help Ishe win? Maybe because Ahmed prays to a different God...Allah, their Christian God would help them win?

Ishe did win... in a tough match. I was rooting for Ishe not because of his "Faith" but because Ahmed was really cocky and vain. His nickname is Babyface.....

Anyway... I enjoyed the match and will most likely tape the next episode also.

5. I guess they do....
However... it just seems odd to me to pray for fists of steel.... to beat up someone. Of course I don't pray ... I find it hard to believe that a God somewhere is listening to every wish humans can come up with. If I deserve help in some way I think he/she would know it... and I wouldn't have to ask.

Just My Humble Opinion...

2. I'll be impressed when I see the first athlete blame god for their
loss. They always give him credit for the wins, why not the losses?

8. I agree....
It seems to me that the God of ones choice gets all the good credit...but never the bad. I blame myself for my mistakes and I give myself credit for the good I do. I just try to do more good than bad and hopefully leave this planet a little better than when I came here.

3. Who is the one who committed suicide last month?
Is he any good of a boxer?

4. That was Najai, one of the other contestants was giving
an interview on our local morning radio station and said that he had some problems. It's sad, I don't know what kind of a boxer he is though. A friend of mine that really follows boxing said that a few of them are really good, Ishe for example is supposed to be quite good. I think most athletes that pray, pray to protect them from injury. Some pray to win, but know going into a contest that someone has to lose.

7. I hadn't heard about that.
It's too bad that a person's life gets to a point that suicide seems to be the only answer. I heart goes out to all his friends and family... as those that are left behind are the ones that truly suffer.

6. i liked the episode the week before that better
the show is different than i thought it would be because i'm not a huge boxing fan either.

Ahmed was just a goober, and i'm glad he lost.

9. A GOOBER?
Edited on Fri Mar-18-05 12:20 PM by Jokinomx
I haven't heard that one for a while....LOL

I have an aquaintance from my home area that has a nickname Goober....

I don't know if it came from the Gomer Pile show or not... I think Gomer's cousin was Goober....from the Andy Griffith show.

Thanks for the chuckle...

I agree Ahmed deserved to be beaten.

11. lol, sorry, it just came out.
i'm not sure where it came from either, but it fits Ahmed because he acted like such a mouthy badass and yet all he was really worried about was how good he looked. :eyes:

13. Yes...
After the fight all he worried about is that he didn't have any marks on his face.... it reminded me of the old song..."Your So Vain"....

LOL

15. I agree, although it was kind of funny when he tried to trash talk
with an accent. I loved the shot of Ahmed's girlfriend looking at him like a loser when he got beat. I bet she dropped him like a bad habit after that show.

17. Ahmed's girlfriend looked at him like trash...it was funny as hell,
and it told me that she was just as shallow and vain as Ahmed. That punk was such a jerk I could hardly wait for him to lose.

14. Yes....
S.S.. and Sugar Ray Robinson.

Its not bad for a reality show. As I stated earlier... I lost my enthusiasm a few years ago... but, I was pleasently surprized with how they presented the program.

18. Ray Leonard
It's Sly and Sugar Ray Leonard.

I think Sugar Ray Robinson passed on some time ago.

19. OMG....
Edited on Fri Mar-18-05 06:08 PM by Jokinomx
I don't believe that I typed Robinson .... I wasn't even smoking anything!!! It is amazing how a person brain works..(or doesn't)....I would have bet my paycheck that I typed Leonard because in my mind that is who I was thinking of.

Thanks for the correction for a slightly embarrassing mistake.

16. All I know is that the one guy who MARCHED himself up to shake
hands after being challenged (and subsequently lost) was a stupid jarhead punk, and he's gotta get that shit out of his system before he really embarrases the rest of us :eyes:
