it takes a toll on the server becuase it has to connect to the

7. I am not sure, but I think those were two of the features they

wanted in this software upgrade. I am sure they (admin) knows what demands each item makes... your statement that it has to connect to the database everytime makes little sense to me... since the whole page is dynamically generated, everything has to "hit the database" no?
So if that is a feature you want on your page, and I think for the most part, it is, the hits on the database are insignificant, right?

Correct me if I am wrong, please.

9. True BUT you can connect to get one thing or get 50 things

and those add up. Something has to do with the way the programmer (not DU) wrote the forums, php is much faster and more gentle on the server than CGI yet with the same load the server it's now overloaded.
MySQL 4.0+ offers a caching system and helps a lot on the server.

I just remembered that the last DB was not Mysql, it was flat file so the comparison is not valid.

15. I agree with you. Anything to fix the problems ASAP.

I also agree with skip fox that I would rather retain views than ratings.

I also posted a triple reply myself for the first time last night. It just wouldn't work, so I copied my text and started over. When it finally worked, there were three of them! Oops! How embarrassing! I thought this was the only time this had happened to me, but a friend said he had seen another one like that by me on a thread that discussed the current technical problems. He said he replied that he thought that it was ironic that it happened on that particular thread!:-)

14. If there's an option between them, I'd vote to keep the Views

and drop ratings. (Freepers even mess with the ratings so it's not very useful.)
