AKA "Is my bird evil?" :D

"Moluccan" is the spelling you're looking for. These huge cockatoos are from the Indonesian Islands of Molucca. And yes, they are a handful! I have to say that when I was doing a lot of work with large parrots, Moluccans intimidated me more than any other species! :) They're as big as a macaw and their beaks seem to have more leverage. Also, they have longer necks which make them more difficult to properly restrain for wing and toenail trims. Eek!

Alien Girl's umbrella cockatoo is a close relative of the Moluccan cockatoo. These types of birds are known as "broad-feathered" cockatoos. The only two broad-feathered cockies that are offered as pets are the Moluccan and umbrella cockatoos. There are other species, most of them scattered throughout the Indonesian Islands.

There are also black cockatoos...google "palm cockatoo" or "red-tailed black cockatoo" to see some amazing birdies. :)

Then, of course, you have the short-crested cockatoos like Goffin's and Ducorp's, slender-bills, bare-eyes, etc. And a whole slew of sulfur-crested cockatoos, which are quite beautiful.

The most beautiful of all, in my opinion, is the Major Mitchell's cockatoo. Here's a link to a drawing I did of this species. I won first prize in the professional division at the fair. It actually looks better in person: goldrush.com/~ladyhawklh/cockatoofan.jpg

I thought I'd better not include the "http" and "www" parts because it's a big file.

7. Sorry...forgot to check back in...that is beautiful
Yeah, she is an intimidating presence, but I have gotten in there with her. She'll still turn on me in a nanosecond, but she also comes right to me and puts her head down...and I can tell when she's scheming to nail me. She's not a bird to turn your back on when she's out.

I'm going to post Amazon links, but you can probably get them from Barnes and Noble. It's just I like Amazon's website layout better.
