Does anyone know if the United Methodist Church
or other Protestant church group still runs assisted living/nursing home/retirement facilities? They used to be throughout the south in the 60s and 70s but I've not been much involved with the Methodists or any other denomination and I don't know if there are any such groups/facilities anymore.

Anyone have any suggestions where/how I might investigate?

2. United Methodists have homes throughout the country.
Where are you?

If you Alta Vista "united methodist assisted living" many places pop up.

3. thanks - I 'll do that.
Mom's in Idaho, she's Methodist, and I don't think her current assisted living facility will work for the long term.

5. I worked at one in SC for a year as a social worker....

Beautiful place, marble floors in the lobby, chandeliers, etc. Run by the Methodist Church. However, I witnessed bad things happening, verbal, physical abuse of residents, I reported the home to social services and other state agencies that could do anything. That year really opened my eyes to the horrible things that happen in SOME, not all, nursing homes. By the way, this nursing home, was considered to be the "Cadillac" of nursing homes in this community. I left because I was ethically challenged on a daily basis.

6. was it church affiliated, or privately held?
My mom's in a great one now, but she's out of assets, the facility costs keep rising and my sisters and I just might not be able to afford to keep her there forever -- she's got early Alzheimer's and is going to need some heavy-duty care in the coming years.

I know there are nursing home horror stories... definitely want to avoid those places.

9. It was 100% church affiliated...........
Even had the word "methodist" in the name of the institution at one time.

11. that totally sucks...
what kind of warped person harms the elderly (or children, or animals...)?

OK, I'm a laywer - non practicing, but I had 6 years' practice of being a major-league big-city lawyer asshole so I guess I can eyeball these places and let them know I don't shy away from ripping someone's balls off if they hurt my mother.

12. I was born and raised just outside of Asheville and I'm United Methodist
our church's congregation was mostly made up of retired UMC ministers and bishops. LOTS of them lived at Givens (our UMYF group always went Christmas caroling there every year).

I also went to Brevard College and when I'd go to the Brevard Music Center for concerts...always a big bus from Givens there.

They have both condo-type facilities and assisted living facilities. Really ritzy. My mom has always said she wants to end up there if she had the $$$.

17. Givens is probably too rich for my blood...
unless they take a few public aid patients -- my mom's been ill for many years and has no assets left so I need someplace that will take medicaid/medicare as payment in full, or as 3/4 payment. My sisters and I help, but we just can't continue to do it to the extent we have and stay solvent.

I was hoping (still hope) that there are some nonprofit church affiliated facilities we could get on a waiting list for, that wouldn't gouge us.

15. right now we're in about
an hour and 15 minutes southwest of A'ville near the Georgia border, but we'll be moving up toward Asheville in the next several months...this area is lovely but small and very very fundie.

Moved here recently from Virginia and love the area, but I'd like to get to an area a little more liberal if possible!

18. You'll love Asheville. It has changed SO much since I was a kid.
The city is really coming out of the dark ages. There's still a lot of fundie-influenced folks around but downtown is awesome! We're going there Sunday for a peace rally. Driving all the way from Winston cause there's nothing going on here in town or in Greensboro. Go figure.
