About Wearing Polyester
I'm of an age that I felt there was almost no more grievous clothing sin than wearing polyester.

But these days in the best men's wear departments there are polyster and poly/cotton blend pants, going for a fine price.

"This isn't like THAT polyester," I was told by a salesperson in response to my reluctance to even try them.

So what's the deal? Is there good polyester? How can I tell the difference??

1. The newer poly blends can make some fantastic knits... it really ISN'T
like the old polyester that was practically like PVC.

I can't explain it, but it really IS completely acceptable. Seriously, if it feels cheap, it is cheap.

But a nice piece of clothing isn't cheap... no matter what fabric it's made of.

3. Actually, in a panic I bought a 65/35 blend and forgot about it
Much later one day I was in ANOTHER panic and found the pants in my closet and put them on.

They're my favorite work pants now - lightweight and springy, but resilient and pressed looking.

2. Today's polyester pants are NOTHING
like the doubleknit polyester pants of the 70s. My husband has several pairs of polyester and poly blend dress pants that are very nice.

4. Polyester is your friend!
Good quality poly blends are A-ok. Some of them feel almost like wool, some like linen--not like that nasty, itchy gabardine fabric from the 70's.

5. It's true that..
... these (synthetic) fabrics have come a long way. But I still prefer natural fibers when possible. For women's clothes, I like the synthetic stuff. But I don't wear women's clothes

You can do almost anything with cotton :)

6. My preference is for cotton too. But I must admit, those easy to wash and
come out looking pressed pants sure are a blessing for work wear.

7. I wear polyester when I ride.
It's a blend called "Coolmax", supposed to wick sweat away.
The only other choice is WOOL...Uh, I don't even wear wool in the winter, 'kay?

Wool bike clothes....Brrr! Sounds like wool bathing suits...How....."Granny-ish"!

8. I must wear cotton
Back in the days when I wore the blends, my skin couldn't breath properly, becoming a culture for new life forms and civilizations. Though in the winter for riding when I have to swaddle for deep space temps, my Hamlet-leggings are some sort of blend. I prefer to be bare legged with cotton shorts - longer in the winter; a shorter version for summer.
