Guess what? I'm on the "No Fly" list!!
Edited on Mon Mar-21-05 09:17 AM by Coventina
Or so I'm told by Southwest Airlines.

My name supposedly matches a name on the government's watch list, so whenever I try to fly, I can't check in ahead of time, and have to get hassled at the airport.

I was given a form letter from the TSA that says that if I register a bunch of my personal information with them, that it may fix the problem.
:tinfoilhat:

I hate what this country has become.

On edit: I don't know if I really believe that my name is a match to someone they are watching. I think I'M the one they are watching, due to my opinions posted on this board.

7. Welcome to my nightmare as well. Check this out...
I ordered my prescription drug from a Canadian Pharmacy online. The next thing I know is that I get a letter from Customs saying they confiscated the drug and it will be destroyed within 30 days if they don't hear from me. They also sent me this real cheezzzzzy xerox copy of how it is very dangerous to order drugs from Canada and how they may not be safe..blah, blah, blah

BTW, never contacted these people. I want them to forget I even exist.

Nice Banana Republic we live in, huh?

We can't even utter the old childhood phrase (at the top of our lungs) "It's a free country!"

Sad. I want to get the hell out of here because of the Flim-Flam Man and the spineless Dems, but my husband won't go even thou he bitches as much as I do.

2. My s/o has the same problem with Southwest.
Week before last he flew United and nary a peep or problem with them.

BTW, his is a very common name. And he doesn't post here but is a good Dem.

3. Did Southwest tell him he's on the TSA's list?
Because they told me that it wasn't their choice to hassle me, but the government's.

Do you think they are lying?

6. Yep, that's they told him but when he flew United.....
nada. No questions, no hassles.

We're not sure what to think at this point. SW claims it's TSA but now that he has flown with another airline with no problems, who knows?

BTW, for the past year or so, he's had to fly almost once a week for his job. The problem with SW started in January.

for the gubmint. that's how they knows...

believe me, I've posted a lot of crap on this board, and have never had a problem, the no-fly list is a mess (the ex-girlfriend of a friend helps manage the list) they have so many duplicates and strange names that it is inevitable there are messes.

11. Not all the names are strange.....
Edited on Mon Mar-21-05 09:55 AM by tyedyeto
my s/o's first and last names are very common.........Smith/Jones/Johnson/Miller John/Robert/Thomas/James. Pick a combination from those. They told him it was his name but I find that hard to believe.

Edit: spelling

15. right, what I meant by 'strange'
is incredibly common names of people that are so common to be almost unusable. It's one thing to have "jonathan patrick smith" as a name, but when that also pick up all 'jon smiths' you have a strange name to pick.

16. Thanks for the explanation....
I still don't understand why one airline would have a name on the list and not another?

5. ACK!
I get worried about this because my husband and I gave money to Kerry's campaign, MoveOn, etc. They don't have to say *how* you got on the list so really anything could be enough to get you there.

I so so so so wish Kerry were president now.

12. I have given money to the Kerry campaign, MoveOn, the DNC and
the local Democrats.

I'm not worried about being put on the "no fly" list over it.

14. The problem I have is
that no one has to say why someone is on the list, or how one gets on the list. What standards are there?

My husband is a resident alien and I worry that the INS probably shares information with the people putting together a no-fly list. He's from a "friendly" country, but again no one knows what it takes to get on the list or even if there are standards at all. Or, if there are standards, if the standards could change over time. If I were the wrong religion would I be on the list? If my husband were from the wrong country? Who decides which religions or countries are OK?

I am not at all comfortable with the no-fly list. I think my husband is more likely to get on it than I am, but then he needs it more since he travels a lot for work.

18. I'm not thrilled with the list either, but
I'm just not worried that being a Democrat and contributing to Democratic and/or progressive causes will get me on the list. If that were the case, millions of people would be on the list.

13. *high five* My family has someone on it too. We don't know if it's
my mom/my dad/ME, but my dad did computer support for our local Kerry campaign and I was an intern, and it just makes you sort of suspicious when you've been engaged in political activities and you end up on the no-fly list, regardless of whether or not it's YOU they want.

19. I refuse to fly unless I absolutely have to--
--and since 9/11/01, I haven't had to.

It's disgusting that there's no way to confirm absolutely whether you're actually on a 'no-fly' list. No way to dispute it. No way to find out WHY you ended up on it in the first place.

It is, literally, a system designed to be vulnerable to law-enforcement and political abuse.

This is not my America.

"The Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave -- unless you're under any kind of suspicion, including that of having the 'wrong' politics."

Hey, you think an Administration that won't even let non-loyalists into political speeches would even break a sweat at the notion of reporting people to the TSA just to keep them from traveling freely?
