Well, it looks like I'm allergic to my cats
Every morning I wake up with itchy eyes, runny nose and sneezing all the time. One week in a cat-free home and all my symptoms clear up.

Back just one night with my 2 furballs and the next morning: Runny Nose, Itchy Eyes and sneezing.

1. me too
I just vacuum a lot and put up with it.
I did make my room a no cat zone but, they still scratch on the door at night.
It's not perfect but its better.

2. There are some excellent meds out there
I've known several people who have been able to keep their pets if they take allergy meds. If you are adverse to taking meds for this, then I hope you'll be able to find good homes for your furballs.

3. Don't worry - not getting rid of the furballs
I adore Abbott & Evita too much to let a little runny nose/post-nasal drip make them homeless

4. My furballs are my kids
I told my mom years ago that she wasn't getting any grandkids from me, and she'd have to make do with grand-kitties. Turns out she's fine with that. :D

5. That's too bad--I never knew how common those allergies were until I got
my cats--so many people don't want to stop by because even if the cats are hiding in the other room, the dander that's everywhere affects them.

Well, at least that's what they tell me when they don't want to come by!

6. Could also be allergens are sticking to their fur. Professional groom
may help.

My father was deathly allergic to my cats. I started having them professionally groomed on a regular basis (coat trimmed, baths, etc) and his symptoms cleared up amazingly!

I remember reading that it is really the saliva that folks are allergic to, and if you have the cats professionally groomed, they groom themselves less (mine did), therefore, less saliva.

When I started the grooming regimen, I also started vacuuming my upholstery (sofa, chairs, bedspread) more often before Dad's visits, I believe the combination of all this helped quite a bit.

Good luck!

7. Petsmart sells "Allergy Relief from Cats"
It comes in a bottle or wipes. Simply rub the stuff on the cats, let it dry, and you get relief for about a week.

I use it in Boots, especially when my friend, who's allergic to cat dander, visits--or when I visit her.

8. Is it expensive?
Since our cat died, out kids have been bugging us for another. But our sinuses are all better now so it's hard to even consider one.

10. There's a lot of ways to treat it
if it's directly related to the cats. 90% of all "cat" allergies are from the dander (essentially similar to our own dandruff) on the cat. If you eliminate the dander, it will get rid of the allergy. However, most of the time, people can't or don't want to go to any measures to do that. It's also why some cat lovers choose the Sphinx breed (the hairless ones) for pets, because they don't shed and create more dander.

Your absolute best bet is a three fold process. First, try to eliminate cat hair shedding as much as possible. This might mean restricting the kits on where they can sleep, or making special spots for them of their own, and making sure they stay in those spaces. The second part is to get them to a groomer for a good bath and a brushout. This will control the dandruff right from its source. The third part of the process is actually optional--see if the first two measures work, and if they do, you won't need the third step. However, if there is still some lingering of the effects of the dander, talk with your regular doctor on what allergy medications might help you. Most of them will be happy to suggest something.

Now, there is also the possibility that there are other, underlying causes of the allergy flare-ups. Dust? Pollen? Mold or mildew? Many people have a major problem with dust, and don't know it. You can help fight that particular problem directly by getting a mattress cover which filters out dust and other pollutants and allergy agonists. And dusting at least once a week, if not more, can certainly be a beneficial chore.
