*** New group proposal: BICYCLING ***
Spring is in the air and I've been seeing the cycling threads re-emerge. I know there are a number of enthusiasts out there.

I'm (well, actually Blue-Jay came up with it first) proposing a DU cycling group. The purpose of the group would be to discuss equipment and gear, training regimens, organized rides, places to ride, current legislation, etc. We can work on the formal mission statement.

But, first, I want to make sure there's enough interest to support the group. As per DU rules, please register your interest in this group by signing in below.

4. I will soon be joining the ranks of the cycling public.
Count me in. I'll certainly be asking for advice (as a novice who last rode a bike when she was young enough to have pink and purple streamers on the handlebars...but who wants to learn more about urban street riding -- I'm sick of driving everywhere -- as well as building up to a decent distance.)

13. Who says you're too old
for pink and purple streamers? :hi:

So, how bike friendly is your city?

14. Heh.
I have yet to figure out how bike friendly Milwaukee is. I know I see plenty of people on bikes (I live near the university) but beyond that... we have paths and the occasional bike lane.
We shall see.

$5 or $10?

BTW, I took a pic of a real Frankenbike that we saw up at the protest in Chicago. I'll post it for you later when I get a chance.

9. Yeah, I got the $5, need a round "tuit"...
Need to quit reading the important "Bush's Favourite Vegetable" threads and do it...

One of the "chunk666" style tallbikes? What's the name of that group up there?

12. Cool!
Wait till you see the very impressive mission statement Jason has come up with.

I've already been out riding several times in spite of the cold. You just have to have the right gear. Yesterday I did 42 miles.

36. 42 miles? In THAT weather?
You must either have electric booties and gloves or a hell of a lot better circulation than me.

I did 18 miles 2 weeks ago. On my "new" fat-tyre flier.

34. Just last Sunday
We've been training (in a very relaxed way) the last couple months for our big annual ride, the Easter Hill Country Tour, which is next weekend. This, after not riding much at all last summer and fall. We went 18 miles... in the speedy time of 3.5 hours! ;-)

Last year our extreme mountain-biker friend complained that we "dawdle", and that he would love to ride with us more if only we would "push the pedals harder".

But we get in quite a bit of birding and photography and lazing around next to creeks while we dawdle, so it isn't all bad.

Are you planning on doing any big week-long rides again this year?

maybe we should have two groups ...

one could be called: tricycles and mountain bikes and the other could be called: real cycling for roadies ...

30. Great idea
I'm just re-starting out after about 20 years of not riding a bike.

I'll be riding trails around town almost exclusively and just bought a new, inexpensive hybrid.

After a whole couple of miles on it (I forgot I HAD those muscles), I love it! I'm really looking forward to driving a car less and hauling my own carcass around more.
