Let's All Say It Together: Skee-ah-vo!
Edited on Mon Mar-21-05 12:59 PM by stopbush
That's how it's pronounced. It's an Italian name that means "slave."

A name pronounced as "Shy-vo" would be spelled Shaivo. It has no Italian equivalent...or Englsh equivalent, for that matter.

Just wanted to get that off my chest to fellow members of the Democrat (ugh) Party.

:)

1. I'll go along with how Michael pronounces it, which is apparently
Shy-vo.

3. Right. BTW, my DU handle is pronounced
Edited on Mon Mar-21-05 01:04 PM by stopbush
"shtoop-boo-shee." And I live in Las Vegas, which is pronounced "Los Vee-guz."

Just wanted to clarify that.

BTW - I wonder how other Schiavos around the country handle that?

4. I realize this is the Lounge, and you're probably just goofing,
but don't you think Michael is entitled to pronounce his name as he sees fit, and that we should accept his pronunciation?

5. Seriously.
I mean, WTF?

Now we're going to step and ALSO tell him how to pronounce his own damn name?

6. I'll accept his mispronunciation in his particular case as it is

his perogative, but I certainly can't accept it as the correct pronunciation for any Schiavos in Italy or anywhere else in the USA or abroad who probably get it right. Besides, the correct pronunciation is a much more beautiful rendition of the name than Michael's mangling.

Maybe we can get Tom DeLay to hold a special session of Congress to carve out an exception on this one, too. They seem to be in that mode these days.

But, seriously, mispronouncing foreign words is just a bug-a-boo with me. It goes back to my youth when I had a family of Italian heritage that lived next door. They were adamant about having their names spoken in true Italian style (in Ohio, the hard "ch" sound of a "cam" grouping was soften to an "s" sound, and they hated that). It was my first intro to the nicities and respect of non-American languages, something that has stayed with me ever since.

I need to work on that bug-a-boo. Maybe I'll relocate to Italy!

And, yes...there's a reason I posted this in the Lounge.

:)

8. My wife's maiden name is "Johnson"
but they pronounce it "Johns-on," as in, "John's on the couch."

Just kidding.

10. Okay.
My maiden name is of Norwegian origin. I pronounce it just like every other American I have ever heard of with that name. Some guy I met somewhere along the line INSISTED that I was pronouncing the name wrong, and he demonstrated the "correct" pronunciation with a very affected Norwegian accent.

No, it was my name, and I was pronouncing it the way my father and his father pronounced it. I was not "wrong" about my own name.

I once worked for a man who shared a last name with a local newspaper columnist. It was the same name, of French origin, but each man pronounced it differently. I found out later, through my boss' son, that these were actually two branches of the same family. And I still don't think either man was "wrong" in the way he pronounced his name.

11. Yes, I also resent people telling me how to pronounce my name
I also have an Italian surname, beginning with "C", which, in Italian, is prounounced "ch", but my family has always pronounced it as an "S" sound. Occasionally someone lectures me about how I say my own name and I tell them to butt out.
